X-pipe exhaust query

hi,

im having a custom made de-cat front section made for my 3200, by reading on here it seems widely put out that having an x-pipe installed will produce more power, and also be louder exhaust tone.

so they guy said im best to buy a ready made x-pipe so its cheaper and easier for him, now i found this which may be suitable on ebay

all good, until i come to this line:

The faster acceleration of the gasses through an X-pipe causes them to flow in a linear fashion parallel to the walls of the tubing rather than tumbling. This "laminar" flowing gas is much quieter than tumbling gas, resulting in an exhaust tone up to 8 decibels quieter than a traditional H-pipe.

that sounds completely opposite to what i want, it says it will be quieter than 2 -pipes?

im really confused now, i just want my car louder and as many people call it, more ferrari sounding.

Not wholly sure about all that Beau........but the Maserati sound to me is macho/bass like at low revs...the Ferrari one a bit more of a higher pitched rasp as full revs......as opposed to a...hard to say.....ask Rob/Hodroyd, what mine sounds like!!!!

that is what i want :) iv done some research on some american websites and most say the H-pipe gives more bassy droney roar, and the x pipe is a smoother higher pitched noise.

so looks like im half way towards answering my question.

but the thing i wasnt too sure about was that the 3200 being turbo'd, maybe this will cause another difference between H and X

You do need to stand behind a few up-graded 3200s to have a listen to be honest...................................having said that you never truly appreciate them as you're in the cabin!

I'd have thought that H wil keep the gasses seperate to the back therefore higher pressures with half the frequency than X which spreads the pressure between both back halfs but with twice the frequency...

I have a x pipe up grade to my standard spec 4200. To be honest I have no idea how it has changed the sound outside as I only ever drive it...and I had not listened to the car before it was done. But it's a little better than I remember my 2003 car and the blip on down changes in sport is great...but that may be the softwear?

The effect of an x-pipe is largely lost on a 3200 as the pulses are smoothed by the turbos.

X Pipes are used to try to address the imbalance of V8s with crossplane crankshafts. 3200 4200 QP etc all have crossplane. (The main difference betrween an F430 and an 4200 engine is that the crank is flatplane in the F430) On an F430 the exhaust pulses are 180 degrees apart on each bank of cylinders. THe payback is that a decent forged flat plane crank has only 4 counterweights and hence less energy is needed to accelerate the crank (more power goes to accelerating the car!). There is the obvious weight saving too. Of course the best sounding V8 ever is Flat Plane - that being the F355.

Not sure what the exhaust pulse intervals are on a Maser V8 (and the 3200 and 4200 are no dount not the same) but the interval could vary between 90 deg and 270 deg as it does on some american V8's depending on the point in the cycle. The best way of course to smooth a crossplane crank is to do what Ford did with the "Bag of Snakes" manifolds on the GT40, where they grouped the headers with a 180deg pulse interval. Easy on the Ford V8, harder to make fit on a Chevy, so the X-pipe was really developed for he Chevy. Sticking an X pipe on a Maser is a bit pointless.

Does an X-pipe give more power? Probably not, but if it does we are talking very very small amounts - ultimately if gives smoother running and if you are using old Ford iron for 24hr endurance racing this will mean better reliability. Be assured a 3200 engine is a far stronger and more sophisticated piece of kit than the Ford 289 which powered the GT40!

If you want proper noise remove the rear silencers (you can run it like this to get an idea of how things will sound) then replace the rear boxes with unsilenced pipes. I did this to my car. Speak to Lee who has it now, he's not far from you.

The Ferrari V8, IMO, is a bit one dimensional, it's all rasp and howl at the top end whereas my Maser with little or no silencing has a great bass track, lots of mid and a lovely howl at 7500-8000. I found the X-pipe on mine hade a big difference to the sound levels when used in conjunction with straight through rears and the pops and bangs on the overrun are fabulous. Even the Zonda driver behind me on Tuesday said it sounded fantastic and he could hear it over his engine even when he was gunning it. I have found that a Maserati V8 has a sound of its own and it is one of the very best in motoring so release the sound and immerse yourself in it.

Ian.....what a send off.......not entirely sure your exhaust system is any more raucous than mine.......but sounded just spot on!

Great drive through..........such a selection of cars and a huge turn out for the boy Ryan!
