SM Exhaust

I think they must be Phil! Best to listen with headphones; with valves open there is more bass and more crackles. In use even with valves open it is fairly restrained up to 4k and then they really sing. Very much like my 'Le Mans' spec but not as harsh. I'm hopefully fitting the vacuum kit later this week so I'll have operational valves so I can venture into town centres without giving oaps heart failure. More importantly, there doesn't seem to be any resonance between 1800 and 4000 rpm. It could be the answer for those with coupes that want more sound without the 'boom' and want to keep the standard look.

A bit louder with them open with more pops and crackles. But to be honest it does not sound like there is a huge difference.

I listened with some earbud headphones. A WARNING to anyone else who does this, it gets a **** of a lot louder right at the end of the videos.

I'm just off to put some cotton buds in my bleeding ears. ;)

In real life there is quite a difference, it's just that the mic on an I-pad isn't that great and tends to get a bit maxed out when assaulted in such a way!

Just bumping this up. I'm interested in getting the x-pipe that Matt has prototyped, but we need three or four more takers to place an order at the price quoted (£240 inc vat & delivery).

Go on, you know you want to!

Hi Chris I'm certainly interested

Is this simply modified gs boxes with no other changes to the exhaust? Or are there other mods as well?
What mods have been done to the boxes?

Here are 2 vids that Ian has asked me to put up:

Valves OPEN:

This system spec is as follows; Larini sports cats, SM straight through centre and modified GS boxes. The rear boxes were completely gutted and re-piped. The pipe between the inlet and the loud side now has solid pipe (originally perforated) with a perforated pipe coming off to the 'quiet' side. I will find out how effective the 'quiet' side is later this week when I fit the vacuum system that operates the valves. It's a work in progress.

Valves now operational and they work very well. My only tinge of regret was that they wouldn't open automatically when in sport so imagine my surprise when I found they do open automatically from 3500 rpm upwards because of exhaust gas pressure pushing on the butterfly valve. They close again too when you close the throttle. So now I can toddle around in stealth mode and still unleash the beast when I floor it. However, the valves will always be open unless I'm being followed by police, trying to get on the Nurburgring or trying to sneak off for an early morning blast with the boys. Result!

Just reading through the thread and getting lost in all of the discussions. I have been wanting to do both mods after having the Larini manifolds and sports cats fitted as the GS is still a little muted. Couple of questions:

Has the x pipe and GS modification now been fully developed and what are the final prices?
What is the turn around time as my car will be off the road whilst the boxes are away?
Is it necessary to remove the rear bumper to fit the boxes?

Cheers, Carl

Carl, still going through road testing at the moment but we should have a better idea of final costs and turn around times in the next 2-3 weeks. I am away a lot at the moment so my opportunities for thrashing it are a little scarce at the moment; I was going to do a fair bit of driving over the weekend but I am now going to be in Cancun. Watch this space.

No, you don't have to take the rear bumper off to change the rear boxes.

As Benny says. We are not a profit making outfit so we dont have the funds to purchase sets of them and keep them in stock.

What will probably happen is we will do a group buy and where you will need to supply your own set of GS boxes for modification plus the option to buy the X pipe.

Hi Conaero,
Just wondering if there's any news on the exhaust systems price yet?

Benny, Do you have any photos of the mods you did to the GS boxes?

If I was going to go down that path I'd do it locally here in OZ to make it worth the cost.

Just to bump this thread. Matt and I have fitted his car with unsilenced X-pipe and modified GS rear boxes. A full description with video will be posted very soon. Watch this space as it may appeal to those who want more volume without splitting their ears.

Looking forward to seeing that Benny!

Even with standard cats it makes quite a difference. It also gives you the option to upgrade to sports cats if you want even more sound.

That's what I have got on mine but you can get the cat cans opened and 200 cell cats fitted in place of the 600 and 400 cell standard cats. That makes quite a difference to gas flow and volume levels when changing at least one other section of exhaust (centre box and/or rear boxes).
