New Maserati Coupe Owner (with questions!)

Hello,

I just bought my first Maserati (also my first car!), a 2005 Coupe. Black. Tan Interior. Loud. Very nice, and so far, very pleased with her. Although my neighbours have commented that they can hear whenever I leave/come ^.^;

So far, I've not had any problems with the car! Which is a great surprise and comfort to me, as this is the first car I've ever owned, and am somewhat clueless with cars ^.^;;

So yes, new driver, new car, 390hp, no wrong can come from this ^.^; (You do not want to see my insurance bill).

I took her for a drive through the Swiss alps (I live in Switzerland), and she handles very well, accelerates/brakes great, and drinks fuel like its going out of fashion. However, I knew she was a thirsty girl before I got her. And this leads me into one of a few questions I had:

Is it possible to add on an endurance/enlarged tank? I plan to mainly do long distance trips (1000km across France) and would like to minimze the number of fuel stops.

The Sat Nav/Console section is not the prettiest in the world if I'm honest. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can replace the whole thing? Put something a bit more prettier there (leather, or brushed aluminum rather than the plasticy bits). And swap out the satnav screen for something more modern? I do not know much about car customization, and everything I've googled always points to adding more horsepower/noise (and I do not need more horsepower/noise ^.^;)

Also, when I bought the car, I got NavTeq CDs for all of Central Europe (Germany, Switzerland, Austria), for 2010. Unfortunately, this does not include France/Italy (where I actually want to go). Does anyone know of a way for me to.. get.. these CDs? Seems a waste to throw these away and buy a whole new set from NavTeq (I did not see a trade-in/upgrade option).

I hope it is okey that I am posting here, as I live in Switzerland (rather than the UK where this board belongs), it is just that I'm an expat here, and its easier for me to talk in English ^.^;

Thank you all.

Hi Tux! I'm afraid I don't know enough about the sat nav to help with your queries, but congrats on the purchase and welcome! May you have many years and miles of happiness together. Any pics yet?

Hi Tux,

Welcome to the forum, There are a few on here that have binned the NIT system and screen but the cost of doing this is you lose the trip info the climate control info and all of the other info that is available. I amongst others around the globe are trying to fathom the information being fed down the data cable into the NIT unit (in the armrest) as it should be possible to feed this into a custom built carputer running on Windows or another operating system. It would then be entirly practical to replace the screen with a touch panel and away you go!

Just need a few weeks with nothing better to do and I'm sure I'll crack it!

I'm sure others will be along shortly to tell you what they have done... and those CD's will really be welcome amongst the gang here!

You are very welcome - it is a very large fuel tank (c85 litres) in a small space. Personally I would leave it alone as a 500km range is fine. Can't help on the Nav I am afraid.

Welcome agreed it's best to leave the fuel tank alone if you ask me. I can get 400 out of my old GS if I drive it sensibly, which is difficult!

Hi Tux and welcome to the forum.

I haven't heard of anyone fitting a bigger tank. I guess it must be do-able, but at a cost and at the expense of boot space.

As for the centre console moulding, all I've heard of is various wraps. Okay if you like that sort of thing?

Hope you'll keep us informed as you get to know your car?

Cheers, Emtee.

Tux, a warm welcome to the magical world of Maserati. If I was you I too would leave it standard apart from a decent exhaust system, decent brake pads and a DMS up grade. Then sit back, floor it and enjoy!

Hello all,

Thank you for the warm welcome!

After all the replies and more research, I am of the opinion too that I should not mess around with the gas tank (if it's not something that is commonly done, then I doubt it could be done properly). I thought about additional modifications (exhaust, brakes, chip, etc), but am unsure how legal they are in Switzerland/EU with their numerous rules (and to be honest, I am already happy with her sound/performance as it is).

However, the control panel/sat nav system is still on my list of things to do (I think this was a Fiat part? So I do not really mind changing it out). However, have not found anyone who can recommend someone to do this nicely/properly. But my search will continue.

At present I do not mind loosing a lot of the information it displays, since I do not really need it. I have a nice clock to tell the time, and the rest of the screen output is not really useful (if I can swap it out with a sat nav screen).

Presently I'm looking at hooking up my N97 Mobile Phone to it (trying to find a nice way to 'attach' it securely to the screen). The N97 is nice as it has an RF transmitter, so I can stream all my music (and I think movies/etc) to the Maserati's sound system (and this works well). It also has a better sat nav (without a mean german woman telling me to turn right all the time!) ^.^; With Ovi Maps I can download the maps and plan routes online, and do the navigation offline (so no data charges as I roam across western europe).

Downside of course is, its small ^.^;

Oh well, in a couple of weeks I plan to go for a 2000 km trip (1000km each way). Will see if I can do it with no more than 2 fuel stops each way, and will report back.

I can get 300 miles out of my 4200, but not 400, well not unless I push it the last 80 miles.

On saturday on the way down to DMS I got 22mpg at 75mph on the cruise control. Did the rolling road, and on the way back mainly at 75, a blast to 135 and another up to 155 on the M40 and we refilled at 383 miles. En-route we reset the computer and over the last 26 miles to the services it came back at 27mpg. Could have got over 400 miles with ease. I know it's normally too tempting to thrash it but if you are not in a hurry you can get a decent touring mpg. However, through Wales last night I nearly emptied the tank in 190 miles!

I could get 400, or as near as **** it, out of the GS but it had to be motorway cruising circa 70mph.

Couple of things, did any of you guys realise that the Maserati Trip computer is in Miles to the US Gallon not the imperial Gallon? Page 111 "Average Fuel consumption" of your Maserati Info Centre booklet refers. A US Gallon is 20% less than a UK gallon, therefore if you see 20mpg you are actually doing 24mp(imp)G.

Also I might have some news on the NIT discs, I found a website with Alfa/Fiat/Lancia links that might work on Maserati's. Give me till tomorrow I need to burn a disc and test it out...
