Surely someone has done a mod for that already? that wouldn't take much effort at all to change forward of the throttle body and incorporate a compatible MAF where the airbox exits currently.

Are you referring to a mod to fix the GTS' inefficient intake or to mod the GS / 4200 to include the GTS' noisy nostrils, Newton?

What I'm saying is that it looks to me to be a very easy change to a K&N type filter and cobnut free induction pipe... On the GTS cirtainly compaired to the 4200

Got you, Newton. Yes, agreed. The Trofeo cars have something like that but it looks like the nostrils (thanks Chris, for that description ) are missing.

K&N doesn't list a filter for the GTS but someone clearly makes one. Noor has a performance filter which slots into the existing box.

I would very much like to get something like that on mine. As I'm getting more exhaust out, I need to get more air in. Can't wait.

Is it possible to put the 4.7L intake manifold on the 4200?

I can't see why not its just a cheap copy in plastic version of the 4200/GS one and is found on the 4.2 QP and GT.

The only question is why?....weight saving is the only advantage.

Dunno, just a thought...Maybe help achieve a more GTS type sound... also make it easier to fit the POD filter as well

Benny makes a good point - breathing out easily is one thing but you also need to be good at breathing in. Newton's doing some work on the 4200 intake but does anyone know what the downside is to an exposed filter like the one in the Trofeo pic above? My point is, why by default are air filters tucked away in a black box at the end of some plastic guttering?

My feeling is what the F1 guys call "packaging", Adam. There's a lot to squeeze in an engine bay and that space in front of the wheel is great for stuff that doesn't weigh much.

First, the OEM design is not too good. See where the OEM air box in our car is ? Try to drive through a water puddle deep enough and.... you will hydrolock your engine! Then you're good for a new engine.

The only downside would be to get hot air into the engine instead of cold one. This said, if you direct fresh air onto your intake you'd be good.
Will the filter fit? For sure you'll have to remove the plastic covers first, then I wouldn't bet that it fits since the bonnet plunges down quite fast. The only way to know is to try. So if anyone finds a spare intake manifold, it's worth a try. Noise wise, it wouldn't do much more than a BMC in your stock box.
The only tangible thing would be to get flow figures for the 4200 intake manifold and the intake manifold on the GT :)

Well one of the reasons is around how you can modify the engine's response by tuning the induction tract. Longer induction tracts tend to smooth of throttle snappiness (as I'm givento understand) as it takes a finite amount of time to get the column of air moving. Conversely short inductions can make an engine quite jerky.

Oh, and you can also make it sound rather different :)

At least that's the *theory*.

Thanks. So there are three main reasons for having the air intake as far forward as possible:

- You'll be sucking in cooler air. If you have the intake in the engine bay you need to keep moving and / or have a bonnet vent
- Smoother throttle response
- Noise.

The first one looks the most important, from my perspective at least.

From a perspective of generating big numbers, then yes, cold air is better.

But as with all these things, it's a multiway balance. Total pwer vs driveability vs noise vs ease of maintenance vs exposure to hydrolocking etc etc

It's all compromise innit.

From an aesthetic point of view a conical air filter right on the front of the engine looks the dogs. But I also wonder if it would get enough air flow to it without a bonnet vent?

Does the Trofeo have a vent?
I'd have thought it's going to be sucking in hot air from that location as well.
