GranSport exhaust mods - picture heavy thread

Thought I'd start a thread on this as I've made a little progress today.
I'm going to help my GS to breathe better, starting with the exhaust system and then (hopefully) moving onto the intake when Newton can report progress on the version he's creating.
My GS has the (seemingly) highly restrictive US exhaust system -

hideous, fat, inefficient manifolds with inbuilt cats that go into the squish pipe and a further cat each side:

I have Larini valved rear boxes fitted already which make a glorious roar, but also a terrible boom between 2k-3k revs.
Today I bought a pair of 4200 exhaust manifolds which don't have the cat built in for a bargain price. These manifolds are known to be better flowing and have larger diameter pipes than the US-spec.

I've looked at the differences between Larini and Supersprint exhausts and they appear to have a very similar design, but significantly different prices - the Larini option costing around 50% more than Supersprint, even when discounted.
I've been in touch directly with Supersprint in Italy and have been very impressed with their response.
I've decided to go with the Supersprint pipes with sports cats. These will feed into a straight through sports silenced x-pipe and then exit through the Larini rear boxes. It will look like this:

The squish pipes are changed for 2 smaller pipes to clear the steering rack, which should be better flowing than stock. The sports cats are 200 cell which will also free up a lot of the blockage of the standard system. The only additional work will be to extend the lambda wires that will now fit after the sports cats. Supersprint have already sent a complete guide to doing this including pictures.
I will be ordering the Supersprint parts soon and expect them to take a few weeks to arrive as they are made to order. I will also be putting my car on a rolling road to get a definitive before and after comparison to see if any more power is released.
As more happens I will update this thread.

Good work, MAF. I look forward to seeing - and hearing - the results.

So, I just need to get in touch with the genius craftsman who made the exhausts on that Disco Volante from Top Gear, and then I'll be happy...

Failing that, I'm going to get an un silenced x-pipe with Matt and see what that sounds like, then it's time to start playing with back boxes and induction.

The best way to get that noise is to drop the 4.7 from the GTS in. I reckon somebody will do it to a GS in the future. Wonder how difficult/expensive it would be......

I think the wet sump is the problem as it makes the engine a lot taller than the dry sump 4200. That said I believe it is the same block casting so it really shouldn't be difficult to put the bigger internals (liners and pistons etc.) into the existing. I did the calculations a while back and with the same stroke it worked out about 1.3mm radius on the bores to get from 4.2 to 4.7....

So help a novice here...what is it that makes the GTS sound so much better than our 4.2 seems to make so far, is there crafting of the sound by shaping the exhaust; something on the induction; just the bigger engine (can't see this being it though); different crank / firing pattern / something else in the engine?

If it's mostly exhaust related then it *can* be done with a 4200...just needs a craftsman to do it. At an exorbitant cost obviously. : (

Edit : and I'm not just talking volume here, there's a deepness to the sound of a GTS that I haven't heard from any 4200 so far...even the full larini system on Robs or Simons cars.

I've not got to look under a GTS yet but my punt would be on it being a bigger bore pipe all the way through to increase the bass... I'm probably wrong though.

Mate check out X-OST... here's a link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGfJjfS5rOA the black car sounds pretty epic.

It's not all in the exhaust. This is something to do with it. Not exactly sure what but as I understand it helps create that deeper rumble. You're welcome to have a poke round mine anytime.

PS - I may be wrong! Those of a stronger engineering and exhaustic-acoustics bent will have far more of a clue.

I did wonder what the nostrils were all about...looks like some kind of tuning thing to resonate at different frequencies, but as you say, it looks quite technical as far as engine/exhaust notes go. I bet Newtons mate would understand.

That's the in-box and I'm not sure how that affects the out-box but never the less it is many times better than the 4200!!!

Are the downstream of the filter? Surely lobbing unfiltered air in is not a great idea?

C

Standard practice on almost all cars; indeed if you look at the oil filler on the right bank you can see the breather dropping over to the bottom of the plenum anyway!
