I’ve said this time and time again. People buy them because they save them money (offsetting tax etc). They then say they’ve bought it because it’s good for the environment. Virtue signalling. Are any of us on here environmentalists? Only people who can truly claim so need to live off grid with no children on a vegan diet. Rest are just talking sh1te. Greenwashing is all around us, some of us choose to see through it, some lap it up as gospel.

I don't drive a company car and am mid cycle on a 6/7 year term on my current daily driver. I will choose from what is available at the time to replace it which will likely be a BEV with much better battery tech than now/the last two years (I refuse to buy a Tesla on design and EM issues). This will happen for a whole load of technological and policy issues that I cannot influence.

As for sports cars I would miss the sound of my Italian V8 and German V6, both n/a and pre GPFs. Anyway sports cars (not super cars) are a declining breed as the new stuff is not that impressive. As I said earlier, lots of 911 owners who drive a Taycan mention how brilliant it is which is informative and nuts in equal measure for a variety of reasons - space, performance, weight, ability to drive quickly on winding roads etc. However, if more and more people believe this then whatever the reasons are, cars like the 911 will end up as low volume halo marketing tags and nothing more. Sad for us but if they can make a huge, two tonne, four seater handle then what need is there for sports cars? (that's the exam question as for daily drivers the trend is too well established to go away and if anything is past the point of debate).

As petrol is heading for £10 a gallon I can see the EV becoming more popular , for most people it will make sense and now they're on motability with zero up front payment in 3 years there'll be plenty of low mileage choices on the used market.

But , cheap can't continue , at some point the government will reach tipping point where fuel duty has been eroded so the revenue will have to be recovered , whether it's through smart meters or road charging remains to be seen but it's coming

This is how a litre of fuel is made up

Petrol: Wholesale 78p, Biofuel 12p, delivery & oil company 1.7p, retailer margin 3.5p, duty 53p, VAT 29.7p

Diesel: Wholesale 69p, Biofuels 18.9p, delivery & oil company 2.1p, retailer margin 11.2p, duty 53p, VAT 30.8p

FYI esso supreme 99 in certain parts of the country contains no ethanol , if I wasn't in the North west it's what I'd be using , I refuse to use E10 even in the smart car.

Makes me LMFAO all this EV movement...
  1. They are absolutely NOT environmentally friendly.
  2. The EV used car market is going to leave a lot of people very dissapointed.
  3. The government will catch up with EV owners sooner rather than later and royally **** them right up the **** just like any other motorist.
  4. Remember the government push for everyone to buy diesel? :D

I can't disagree with any of that.

Does anyone actually “buy” an EV? Surely most are “bought” on various monthly payment deals with guaranteed future values? It’s the way the market has been designed now.

Can Jo Public generally afford to "buy" a new EV, a decent quality one with a workable range, they are so expensive!
Which is strange really, as they are quite simple, a scaled up Tamiya RC car!!

Bought our two, well one is a Hybrid and the other a Zoe for my Mum. - Why pay interest or fees when the money in the bank is loosing value.

As the legendary John McGuiness said about the TT race - I would rather have 48 great years than 60 S**t ones. That should not be a decision for the State
Can’t you make that 80 s..t ones, I’m 60 in six months,I’m not reading for dropping in the clay just yet,lol

I’ve got to be honest I’ve been disappointed with Boris Johnson, this whole phasing out ice cars by 2030 was a typical Tony Blair-esque type policy, I didn’t expect it from Johnson, he’s turning into a bit of a prat.

I see and agree with potential issues with Cobalt supplies. However not all lithium based battery chemistries use cobalt. It should also be noted that even those with cobalt have had significant reductions in the content (like 95%).

One of the benefits and pitfalls of the internet is that things are correct when posted become out of date but are still referenced. 5 years ago I did not want an EV, they weren’t better for the environment, weren’t particularly efficient. The rate at which the grid is decarbonising and the tech is improving, means that the maths are changing every day. The direction of travel is obvious, it’s a matter of time.

Yes, social media is not great for spreading facts…I find I’m spending a lot of time debunking myths and half truths - it gets tiring. On the positive side, I enjoy doing research and it keeps me on my toes.

I saw in the news yesterday that Bristol council have increased their charging prices by something like 50%....

Actually it has been increased by 3.5 times to the giddy height of £4.50 from 1 previously... hardly a shocker to fill your car.

It's only in their own car parks.

First time shopped at tesco and charged the i3 for free. Was there for an hours so only extra 40 miles. Car park let's you be there 5 hours. That would be more than enough to charge a i3. Obviously a loss leader for tesco but did feel good getting free elec

Use them and Sainsbury for most of my visits... given the rate they will be charged it is no more a loss for them as their club cards.
