This reply actually began as a reply to 'bigbob' in the 'Maserati Spotted section. However thought it may be worth mentioning it in the General Chat section, where it may be more applicable:-

Good point, unfortunately what I didn't mention is that one of the reasons for the change is the continual anti ICE messaging, almost making you feel like you're driving something out of date and obsolete, particularly in London where if they can charge you they will. That said even EV's will be subject to Congestion Charge from 2025!
The truth is, and I've said this before on this site, in a lot of parts of the UK and I believe in Europe, national and local authorities are becoming increasingly anti car ownership, and once they've finished with the ICE , the EV will be next on their list. These scum already cite particles from tyres and brake dust as pollutants! I maybe off tangent, but I still firmly believe this is far more of a Socialist or perhaps Communist agenda that runs through the environmental groups.
And whilst I'm being very Unpolitacaly correct, I had this misfortune of seeing Rachel Shabi on Sky News press review yesterday evening. Of course free speech and diversity is important, but to use 'my right to free speech', the republican anti Royal garbage she was spouting last night with simply ludicrous! I'm no flag waving stand in The Mall to see the Queen person, but obviously she and a lot of her immediate family do a great job, bringing in huge revenue, and giving us a Head of State that is envied by many round the world, and yes in time I would include Prince Charles in that!
Let's face it, how many tourists are going to visit the UK without the Royal Family, they are hardly going to come here for the great weather!!!!

Welcome to the real world Keith. When you realise that as a white, middle class, heterosexual male with sensible principles you are, automatically, surplus to requirements. The Brave New World is a playground for angst ridden, leftist, Woke W4nkers who are rebels without a clue. They won't be happy until we regress to a winmill powered Utopia that is dependent on donkeys for transport. And when we get there, they'll be complaining that we are knee deep in horse sh!t. My advice is; go with the flow but do your own thing, and the more SJWs you upset, the better. Welcome to the struggle.

Bang on the money!!!!
Even when I go over to the 'dark side' with my intended car change, I will certainly like to stay part of this forum. There aren't many places where you can give a real opinion anymore...

Definitely belongs in the rant thread.

It’s places like this forum that help to remind us that we have more in common than divides people across the political and cultural spectrum. It would be a shame to feed the twin evils of victimisation and hate mongering affect through this great forum, Let’s not give into being so easily triggered by those that benefit from people being divided.

No mate, and not for the first time, you are entirely wrong. What I've worked for and got, I want to hang on to and use as I want. Bolloxcs to the Woke, left wing botty slotters, I'm determined to live my life as I want, not how Greta dictates I should. I assume, as a sun loving, supercharged V8 tank driving, tax dodger you are of the same opinion. I'll probably be banned for such a non-pc outburst, but I thought you should be informed as to your misapprehension. Peace, and love to all kinds of small, furry, slimy creatures that are non-threatening to the cnts that presently rule the world. Fckwits one and all.

Seems my sarcasm was missed.
If you source the “quote” the unscrupulous motives behind it may be more apparent.
Ps. I’m exactly of the same opinion.

Two part thread really. The back end is more a rant, bottle of spirits type debate. As for the front end stuff, my state of the nation temperature sense check - the local posh farm shop - is populated by a lot more electric cars now. The families in company cars are in electric or plug in SUVs/Teslas/Taycans and the oldies are in those cheaper Japanese chariots that can run on battery only - persumably virtual signalling for entry/exit to popular middle class hotspots - but you cannot plug in.

The shift to BEVs is happening really fast now and will accelerate even faster as people are guilt shamed into accelerating their choices. Sure this is another policy which does nothing for wealth redistribution or helping fight poverty but those liberals in the cities in power have never understood this so will keep forcing this change through...

From a 'petrol' heads perspective if I read another post telling me that the Taycan drives as well as a 911 then I will give up with sports cars.

It will take some years to make EVs more prevalent that carbon cars as there are currently around 32.5 million cars registered on the UK's roads, and of course not all cars that come into stock are EVs, so the maths may be more complex than my head is able to work out.

How many electric cars are there in the UK 2022 - Zap-Map
I agree with this but older cars tend to travel fewer miles so are less visible. Once they nail cost effective small BEVs then the transition will speed up assisted by big increases in VED for ICE cars and possible scrappage incentives. If it goes hand in hand with better investment in clean(er) public transport then the number of cars will likely fall materially especially when they start on taxing emissions from tyres.

Since the late 1990s, the UK car market has fluctuated between 2.1 million and 3 million sales, with a peek in 2016 of 3 million units, after a low of less than 2.2 million sales in 2009.

So even at the best ever rates its c11 years before the old stock is replaced by new, of course thats if all new cars are BEVs.

I doubt the Gov has money to pay for another scrappage scheme, and if its anything like the last one it will all be spent on Chinese and Korean imports. Not mention the cost of living crisis which will hit peoples ability to buy new cars along with no doubt a cut in incentives to do so.

I feel under no pressure, morally or socially, to ditch my ice car in favour of an EV. This includes from my friends who are fervent EV owners and advocates. They don’t see the issue is black and white, and will appreciate that reducing demand for new cars, including EVs, also has a role to play in carbon footprints. Also bear in mind the byproduct of industries that produce materials out of oil, such as plastics and polymers, cannot just be replaced easily.

The fact that we find cost-effective ways of keeping cars going, through places such as this forum, is no bad thing at all. When people see our Maseratis on the road, let’s not forget it still brings pleasure and beauty to this world. These all have value for the world we live in.

And one final thing, I don’t use my car that much. I observe that driving behaviour could make a material impact on carbon emissions. For example idiots who overtake to race towards a red light, as opposed to slowing their cars down and potentially not having to brake before the lights turn green.

It’s the same old story, resistance to change. I remember when I didn’t like seat belts - I now feel naked without them. I remember how I, as a certified petrolhead, abhorred automatic cars. Now? All my cars are automatic, having to push in a clutch sounds tedious. As a car enthousiast I thought EV’s would take away the fun in driving, as I was convinced the sound of an ICE and the smell of oil and petrol were what made me love cars. Well, I just bought an EV and I can only say I’m utterly impressed and it brings a totally new dimension to zooming in and out of traffic. It‘s a type of fun that I couldn’t have imagined because I hadn’t experienced it yet.

So to all those who now abhor EV’s for whatever which reason I would say, give it a try, you might be surprised. You can still keep your Maserati - I certainly won’t be getting rid of mine any time soon!

Have nothing against EVs and more than happy for them to replace ICE cars over time. My point was about whether I feel pressure to switch.. which some forum members seem to be reporting. I don’t.

I would wonder why you would want to have both though, if your conviction is about reducing carbon footprints because you are increasing demand for new cars and preventing yours from being reused by someone else?

Cars have a limited life, so we are continually adding to the pool of vehicles whilst on the other side they fall away due to old age and damage. So a new car in the grand scheme of things is a replacement and if it is an EV then all the better.

On having both, theoretically, if I buy a Maserati as a second car from someone who had it as his/her only car, I would set about (or at least increase the possibility of) the introduction of a new EV in the pool.

There you go ;)
