The good morning thread

We have a success! First motor spinning on the post lift, now to fit the second and thread the balancer cable. Phase converter figured out by Alex And that included adding a neutral it was never made with! No sodding about, 415v and 8hp; that would make your hair curly!!!
Very much ,Tommy from Pinball Wizard ;)

Morning all, frustrating day yesterday; got the post lift fully assembled and working fully without load but it seems the phase converter I got hold of is way out of whack as the cross phase voltages are massively out! Turns out it couldn’t lift the arms when we put them on and it is cooking the new motors! So stopping there before I burn something out and it gets expensive. Do we have any phase converter experts on here? I may just buy a generator, it will limit the hours I could use it but may save a lot of grief in the long run.

Have fun all...

I assume you have an inverter to generate the 3 phase? If so you will only get 220v 3 phase out of it. You will need to make sure your motors are rated for that as the current will be high.

Zep, it is a phasing static that produces 415v on three phases to start and then when running drops a phase. At least that is what it is meant to do but reading the voltages across the phases was way off so I suspect it has issues. I’ve just bought a 6.5kw generator, I’ll use this in the interim to refine the lift and then see about possibly getting a rotary phase converter which will give me a better conversion. I really don’t want to damage the new motors.

Not an expert by any means, sounds to me like you need something similar to an Invertek variable speed inverter, where you set all the required parameters , o it could just be the case you need to swap round the phases

Ah, this sort of device is usually used to start a three phase motor and then run it on single phase with a capacitor to mimic the presence of a second phase. The outputs are generally very choppy and it will only work on low torque demands, otherwise the current draw is very high on the one phase which will release the magic smoke.

As Loz says, an inverter would be a better choice as it will also reduce the inrush on your single phase supply.

And there was me feeling chuffed with myself having run a cable from the attic, tucked it behind some drainpipes and down to the back patio so I can fit some outside lights under the pergola.

Today, I shall do nothing very clever.

Athol, if you need a bank account for rinsing any of that filthy money then just let me know. Mates’ rates Easter special, 10%. In and out quick before anyone tips over the e-tables of the money lenders on this holy day.

Morning all. Glorious again in North Yorkshire.
Lamb for lunch on the patio.
Have a safe day.

Just wondering if I have my “phase” training booklet in the loft.

Happy Easter everyone, stuff to do today, possibly clean three cars but it looks very sunny outside today. No walk, very achy...
