The phrase also works with pheasant rather than pedant, and at least you then know what is being plucked, but that's nitpicking.

The original is definitely 'pheasant', but I suspect somebody adjusted it, to wind up some nit-pluckers on here.

That got me wondering if it was nitpick or nit-pick.
Bizzarely, one online dictionary says that the verb is 'to nitpick' but the noun is 'nit-picking'.
I may need to devote the rest of the morning to investigating this...
