I dont have the legendary sticky problem... But I do have a slight issue on the window switches, with what looks like, the black rubber cover, getting little holes in it, so that white plastic bits show through. Am I right in thinking this is a black rubbery membrane on top of white plastic buttons? And therfore... The only way to fix is a new whole rubber membrane, that covers all 5 switches...?

No its a clear rubbery coating over a black painted button with the digits/writing reversed out (a hole/unpainted)

I've got sticky switches on the GS so will need to do this too, I will probably swap the buttons over as you have Martyn. The other bit in mine that has gone sticky is the steering cowling working out from the key slot.

I am convinced the cause of the sticky is the dashboard spray they use in your local car wash which is silicone based and as we know silicone does not degrade but will soak in and alter the chemical make up of stuff it touches, I have known it to lift paint off cars to bare metal and worse it than cannot be got off of the metal! This will break down the rubber coating easily in not a whole lot of time.

So when you get the black rubber wearing out with white bits showing, (they look like breaks in the rubber?), and I’ve seen it a lot - is this fixable? Or is it new rubber time?

I take it that you are referring to the Rat Bans? They just look like the sticky had picked up debris.

The rubberised coating is applied to give a tactile feeling to hard plastics, in the RB's case rubber frames wouldn't last but hard plastic ones that might feel cheep so the answer is to coat them.

The car buttons is a sort of industry go to but throughout the Fiat/Chrysler group at least; my lad's Punto Grande (07) is just sticky all over the dash and buttons and the steering wheel is peeling all over.... Cannot stand the stuff.

Out of interest , I need to do the heater controls aswell . How do you take the carbon panel off ? and can you dismantle the dials so you can remove the dial to work on ?

I used a pair of pliers with the heads in a cloth, and pulled them off. Each one took about 10 minutes at work, soaking them in brake cleaner and using a nylon brush and my finger nails. Look brand new now

Yes, a GS, il admit that I had the whole console out, but yes, just gave them a good tug with wrapped pliers. Just don't loose the little white cone and spring on the back of the dials. I left the actual buttons alone, as was unsure about them, and they look ok.
