BTW, this solution so impressed the folk at Bill McGrath's that they are thinking of offering this solution as a kit.

I PMd Drew before posting. He's in the States until the weekend. I don't think that anyone else has yet gone down this route. So, they should now be forewarned. BTW, this solution so impressed the folk at Bill McGrath's that they are thinking of offering this solution as a kit.
Back today, as BA managed to break a 777 and 'delayed' the flight by 23 hours, 59 minutes and 30 seconds. Not 24 hours you notice... Apparently the compensation rules change at 24 hours. Nor would they declare it as a cancelled flight, just delayed a whole day.
Even when the departure board says "cancelled" what it actually means, BA will tell you, is that it's just delayed by quite a lot. I've gone comfortably over 24 houtrs before now and the flight is never actually cancelled, as such. You should get a pile of air miles, though. Which is kind of like money, if you can ever find a flight you want to take and are willing to stamp up all that tax. *sigh*
I have tons of BA air miles I've found to be quite useless; the restrictions on which flights I may use, plus the taxes, always mean the budget airlines are a better option.
Except the once I managed to use them to fly myself and a good mate business class to South Africa for a spot of motorbiking. What was great about that trip was because BA's online reservations couldn't handle the complicated itinerary we had in mind I had to phone them and the operator I spoke to somehow forgot to deduct my miles. So, LHR>CPT>WVB>JNB>DUR>JNB>LHR all for free - thank you BA.
