QP Spare wheel - solved

I was at Bill McGrath's on Monday having my front disks sandblasted when I mentioned the GTO spare wheel. Paul, had a look at the set up and made sure that everything would fit safely.

The wheel clears everything. Both front and back. But, he found an issue with the Volkswagen bolts that I had bought as suggested by Drew on this thread. These bolts are tapered and they didn't sit securely when tightened. Paul worked out a solution which involved taking the wheel inserts from the wheel of a 222 and fixing them to the GTO spare. Now, the bolts will tighten correctly, with no risk of them loosening when in use.

So, please bear this in mind when going down the GTO spare wheel route with your QP.

I PMd Drew before posting. He's in the States until the weekend. I don't think that anyone else has yet gone down this route. So, they should now be forewarned. BTW, this solution so impressed the folk at Bill McGrath's that they are thinking of offering this solution as a kit.

I finally got around this evening to stripping the boot lining from my car to see whether the GTO wheel, fully inflated, will fit in the boot well.

The answer is, almost:

The photo doesn't quite show that the tyre protudes by about two inches at the rear of the boot as one looks at it. So, I can't cover it with the folding boot cover. However, this doesn't impinge much on available spa e. so I'm pretty happy with the result.

Back today, as BA managed to break a 777 and 'delayed' the flight by 23 hours, 59 minutes and 30 seconds. Not 24 hours you notice... Apparently the compensation rules change at 24 hours. Nor would they declare it as a cancelled flight, just delayed a whole day.

These 222 inserts Elliot - are they tapered seat shims? It looked to me like the bolts sat correctly, but like you, I want a safe solution!

Even when the departure board says "cancelled" what it actually means, BA will tell you, is that it's just delayed by quite a lot. I've gone comfortably over 24 houtrs before now and the flight is never actually cancelled, as such. You should get a pile of air miles, though. Which is kind of like money, if you can ever find a flight you want to take and are willing to stamp up all that tax. *sigh*

Better to use the miles for upgrade IMHO. Looked at the cost to fly to Cancun in October as you might imagine I have 'quite a lot' at the moment.
Tax and fees came in near as damnit the same as the cost of flights alone. Go figure.

I have tons of BA air miles I've found to be quite useless; the restrictions on which flights I may use, plus the taxes, always mean the budget airlines are a better option.

Except the once I managed to use them to fly myself and a good mate business class to South Africa for a spot of motorbiking. What was great about that trip was because BA's online reservations couldn't handle the complicated itinerary we had in mind I had to phone them and the operator I spoke to somehow forgot to deduct my miles. So, LHR>CPT>WVB>JNB>DUR>JNB>LHR all for free - thank you BA.

Some result there!

I only ever use them for long-haul, to upgrade into biz or first. Simply not worth attempting to use miles other than that, and even then it's necessary to book well in advance to be able to get seats.

Apparently we are due 600 euros each - the rules given to me by BA staff in the States are quite clear. They are also clear that the payment MUST be immediate, in cash or cheque, or if not immediately possible because the passenger isn't present, (assumption in the rules that alternative transport has been magically provided), then the payment MUST be made to the passenger's bank account within 24 hours. Not my capitals... BA stated they were not giving any compensation when they gave me the sheet with the info!

Right then
You chaps may recall I started all this about a QP(V) space saver
I have followed all of the posts (so far) and wondered if we had reached a final solution er or not?

Please advise what is required
thanks all for the trials and successes and failures

Both Elliott and I successfully used the Mitsubishi spare wheel noted at the start of the thread - needs shorter bolts (also referenced, and bought via eBay - nothing special about the bolts...), but otherwise it's a great solution. Elliott sold his, as he sold the QP. Mine's still in the boot! :)

Sorry lads I am a bit slow sometimes
I understand the wheel business
but I thought there was an issue with the bolts
The VW bolts mentioned are not safe - is that right ?
IF so what is the alternative
thanks in anticipation

There's no problem with the bolts, really. Elliott's chap thought it would be slightly better with some inserts from an old Maser, my chap said not. You are welcome to have a go with the spare on my car to see for yourself!
