Possible clutch failure

I think I might have trouble with the clutch on my gransport, does anyone have the symptoms of the clutch wearing out.
The first I noticed something was up was yesterday when changing from 2nd to 3rd and the gear the change took about 1 sec and when going in the revs dropped off then rose then the gear went in, no signs of slipping when pressing the accelerator, then at the traffic lights the car pulled away very slowly the revs not wanting to rise then after a couple of seconds it moved off revs going higher and the car felt like it was slipping the clutch, this was the start of my 50 mile commute home but thankfully most of it is motorway which when in 6th drove normal. Then trying to get into my drive the car didnt really want to know, although giving the car some revs it felt like it was not allowing them to rise but with the car struggling to move, no burning clutch smell either. When going into 1st gear it went more with a clunk than at any time before

Before this I did not have any other symptons of what I would normally call clutch wear?

The car is on 34k it had a new clutch at 14k just before I purchased, at the service this year about 5k ago the reading was 23%worn and most of the miles we me have been motorway.

Any comments appreciated

Thanks Ascott

Even allowing for your clutch reading being 25% out it shouldn't be sufficient to cause the symptoms you have , its my guess your clutch is on the way out and the original installation set up was wrong , ( in other words they didn't reset the parameters properly ), hence giving incorrect readings now ,

There are other reasons for the problems your having which should be checked first ,

F1 pump working properly, enough fluid and or the relay working and not sticking , worth changing the relay for £10 first
F1 sensor working correctly
Kis and pis point recalibration

After all the above have been checked which will have to be done at an indie/dealer with the sd2/3 diag , only then would i go down the route of changing the clutch

Just had my GS clutch done at Dick Lovetts 2 weeks ago , along with the release bearing and spiggot bearings which are worth doing at the same time whilst its all out

Hope this helps

Thanks for your quick response, Is the relay easy to check?

Whether the clutch was set up correctly on the first replacement I wouldn't know but that was 3 years ago and I dont appear to have had any other problems until now.

Thanks for your advice I will have to get the car taken to an indie to check, if you dont mind me asking how much did the clutch cost at Dick Lovett.

Kind regards

Hi Ascot, Sorry to hear of the problem. Did you notice whether the gear indicator icon on the dash was flashing? If so this is stored as a fault code and can be read on an SD2. Might help direct you to the cause?

Hi

I have no warning lights or any errors showing, its just not doing what I would expect. Thanks for info.

May be you just need the pis parameters reset , its the speed ( time taken ) at which the clutch bites

I'd get the parameters reset. It worked on mine; it made the pick up a lot better and the changes a bit crisper.

Hey Ascott

I had the exact same issue you described at the start of this post yesterday en route back from work. Did you ever identify the problem??

Could be low hydraulic pressure?

When you unlock the car does the pump whirr at the back for 5 secs?

I can hear the pump whirr when I unlock the car.

Drove the car again today and all seems fine though. The car is going in for a service on the 12th Sept and they will hopefully do a clutch reading, but I don't have much faith in the readings! The last reading was at 73%. Since then I've driven circa 15K without any issues!!

Get them to use the SD to search for stored brake light error codes. Simple plunger switch, but it can throw all sorts of errors and can affect the clutch readings when it's flaky.

Hi Omar

Sorry to hear you are having this problem, it was bad news I am afraid as I needed a new clutch.

Erm, ok, I think you have had the best out of that clutch!...time for a new one.

Personally, I would ask them to adjust the PIS first. The one and only time my car did similar, I took it to McGraths for a look and they adjusted PIS. That was probably 12 months ago and the clutch is still going strong (touch wood!).

Find out the part number on the clutch via the invoice if changed before, the newer versions lasting much longer than originals.....
