Great explanation, Benny! I must confess to being one for the roller coaster adrenalin thrill of a bouncy flight, but Mrs Moans tends not to share my enthusiasm...

I must admit I'm not such a fan of turbulence; it makes doing the Telegraph crossword a bit of a b!tch.

I don't start it until I have nothing to do, which is usually the 8-10 hours in the middle.

It depends what you mean by easy; if it's well within someone's capabilities, it is, if not, it isn't. Long periods away from home whilst soaked in fatigue can get a bit wearing and 20, 30 or 40 times at the same hotel can be too, wherever it is. However, it pays the bills and keeps putting fuel in the Maser. Happy days.

Any interesting stories benny?
Ever came close to emergency landing?

Nothing really, to date, in civvi street but I had a couple of close shaves in the military, best told over a beer or three. To summarise, a G induced loss of consciousness (GLOC) whilst solo in a Jet pig (me being a tw4t), a couple of very near air misses, with Tornados, whilst instructing on Bulldogs (them being a tw4t) and a 90 degree roll at 800 feet (para dropping on Hercs) when we hit the wing tip vortices from one of the 14 aircraft in front (if you can't take a joke, you shouldn't have joined). The numerous engine failures I've had don't really warrant a mention. So, all in all, not much really. Emergency landings are for drama queens, real pilots call them landings.

90 degree roll at 800 in a loaded herc is going to get your attention... Was the back end open (on the aircraft)???

No. We were dropping from the side doors. I got it back under control with wings level at about 350, climbed back to 800, red on, green on and out the side they went. They were probably pretty relieved to jump out and I was pretty f*cking relieved that they were able to!!

All about training I guess, reading the problem and just dealing with it; not any point in panicking that just wastes time and prevents corrective action. I'd love to have been a pilot but I couldn't do commercial... Had my hang glider wings way back but that was as far as I got...
