Do you think Daniel Ricardo is missing the Red Bull now?

Never understood why McLaren wanted him. He has never really shone for a few years now. McLaren would have been better off with Perez but then they signed Daniel far too early.

Daniel is a nice chap and a talented driver. He just needs more bonding time with the new car. Lando is making the most of this to shine...rightly.

Still don’t think he is right for the team Matt. He had the same problem with Renault...So want McLaren to do well though.

Growing up in the 60's and 70's, I loved F1, but watching Drive to Survive is painful. The way money has changed the sport, and not always for the better is sad to see. In season 1, Zak Brown seemed more interested in the livery than the engineering. Its more about keeping sponsors happy than winning races. And don't get me started on Haas. I know some of the guys in Charlotte. :(
Sucks.

Red Bull and Aston played great strategy and Merc the wheels feel off (well not in Bottas case) but the Monaco GP just doesn't cut it anymore, the cars are too wide and too long to race there the only chance of an overtake was during pit stops. After the first lap was there actually a single overtake that was done on the track, I don't think so

Even in 1992 overtaking was tough but at least Mansell could get close enough to Senna to make it exciting

I know what you mean about the overtaking a Monaco.. its non existent.

However, as an event the build up through the 3 Free Practices and then Qualy is unmatched for tension precisely because of no overtaking. Its a shame the peak of the weekend is at the end of Qualy and not the race, but it does test other skills of the teams.

Hence why budget caps will be brought in. Mercedes should win every weekend as they spend by far the most. They have, in the past, reigned themselves in as they don't want to make it look too easy.
As for Zak, he's a marketing man. That's where he made his money. He brought in a new ethos to marketing McLaren. Rather than having a single big title sponsor, have lots of smaller sponsors, they're easier to handle, you can introduce sponsors to each other and they enjoy the experience.
They're on the up now, everyone is talking about them but they're still a long way from Mercedes and Red Bull, and are in a straight fight with Ferrari for third. They just need Daniel to click.

In 2019, Mercedes had a budget of 484 million dollars, Ferrari was a little less and Red Bull 445 million, so not a huge difference, especially when you factor in the fact that Red Bull don’t make their own engines. Until you get to the next biggest spend, Renault, with 272 million. Now that is a big difference.

There's an interesting book (No Angel) about Bernie Ecclestone which aptly documents how much of this came about in F1, but in reality it's happened in all major sports where money and sponsorship now trump everything. Whilst the spectacle of today's F1 is good for tv and revenue, it no longer has the appeal of the time when you could walk the paddock and mingle with drivers. Sad in a way, but that's progress for you and it ain't going to change any time soon.

As the race was red flagged because of tyre failure, restarting it after a wholesale tyre change penalises Verstappen and even Strohl. The race should have stopped and Verstappen given the win The only driver that ‘lucks in’ is TCH.

Stop press; Hahahahahahahahaha.

I enjoyed that, and what a breath of fresh air to see some different faces on the podium.

Hamilton still lucked out, in normal circumstances Max would have won and he also had the fastest lap so he would have gotten another 10 points ahead, now it’s just 0. Quite a bad mistake by Hamilton, he should not have taken a risk.

That was a bizarre end race in lots of ways, overall seems about fair neither championship contenders benefit and some new faces on the podium
