I agree, I just get tied up with the things when trying to get stuff out of my pockets, they always seem to be in the wrong place, so I end up taking the belt off..??
I grew up in an era when there were no seat belts. When I first started driving, main roads were unrestricted and if you had such as an E Type, you could legally travel at 140mph, no seat belts fitted..??

Far fewer cars, far fewer accidents. We also had toughened windscreens instead of laminate, cross ply tyres instead of radials, drum brakes etc, etc. Nowadays, the average city run about can crack 100mph whereas it used to be the preserve of the rich. Supercars then could just crack 140 whereas a 4200 can crack 175. Safety is a lot more important now than it used to be; times have a changed, we should too!

By those measures Ian......road stats prove you wrong.....many fewer cars, much much slower......but road fatalities only 20% what they are now compared to 30/40s/50s

When where seatbelts first put into cars....................made little real difference until legislation made their wearing compulsory

I suppose I'm a bit like the early racing drivers, leather cap and goggles, seat of your pants stuff. It's what you get used to and I know safety is vitally important, that's why we are surrounded by air bags these days. I do wear my belt if doing high speed driving, but tootling around in traffic I'm afraid I can't get used to the things really. One of the accidents mentioned stated that the car mounted the grass verge, spun across the road, down a banking and hit a tree, now that does not sound like a car doing 30-40mph, otherwise he could have stopped it, unless he had a heart attack..??

Wet, dark, too much power.......add in being sh1tfaced....even a 40 mph loss of control will take you over the ditch...I know the road....no room for any error

Too many brilliant drivers lost their lives...never mind spectators over the years......people do have to be protected from their own excesses at times.......

But there's probably 10 times the traffic. I'll bet fatalities per mile travelled is a lot lower now than it was then. The reason seat belts made little difference was that no f*cker used them until they were forced to by law. Why do racing drivers wear harnesses if they don't improve safety? Next!

...10 times the traffic now.................travelling at 100% more speed.......

If you hit anything then....never mind another car you were seriously injured or died........

People are just way too precious......

Very sad . I live in Pattishall on the A5 , and it seems the car was in overtaking lane under power on a very wet road and lost it, it went across on coming lane and into a lay bye then along bank behind for a considerable distance before smashing into a large Ash Tree . no debris left except glass chips. do not know driver or model ,no other vehicle involved
evidence surgests that car was moving very quickly .
nevertheless all very tragic

Any news like that is awful..!!
The amount of traffic today makes you lucky if you can get over 70mph even on motorways. Cars are built a lot better, with numerous safety features. Even if you wear a seat belt, if you have decided that you are going to drive drunk, or way over the speed limit for the weather conditions, you are likely to get in to some kind of trouble. Commonsense has to prevail for your own and others safety. Driving fast anybody can do, but staying on the road and not hitting anything is another matter..??

I knew ther was at least one member in the area and I have a feeling there is another around there too, with a black GS. I bought mine from Green Norton, a couple of miles up the A5, and was told about this other GS.

Sad to hear at any time of year but seems sadder at Christmas.

Stay safe chaps.

That's tragic news. These wet conditions are pretty scary for cars like ours, so check your tyre pressures and don't play silly boogers with the tread depth of your tyres, and if your in a 3200 in particular, treat those painted lane markers with respect; slippy paint and turbos don't mix well.

Less and less opportunity to use our cars' power on the roads these days. Keep the full on stuff for the track & always drive like everyone else is an idiot (which is generally true!)

My mate works for the Paramedics. He tells me, about 70% of people, wear seatbelts incorrectly. Incorrect wear of a belt, can cause pelvic, chest, and shoulder/neck injuries. Some manufacturers, make it extra hard, to adjust the belt/seat correctly.
Same goes with seat to steering wheel distance. How many of us have seen people's chins, almost touching the s/wheel! Sitting forward, back bent, is asking for an injury!
Wide tyres, on wet roads, never get on, so drive a gear up.

Andy.

I can't believe people actually do these things... you're just asking for professional criminals to come for your car!!

Not really. According to my listing I live within 100 meters of Meridian. Any professional theives would probably try there before finding my house.
I agree that if the flag on the map is exactly where your garage is then that's a little daft. But if it's down the road or on the otherside of the village then I thinks it's pretty harmless.
