Lozs 2005 GS was obviously running a 4 pin relay to begin with as it did work.

Agreed we need to ckearthis up though.

Wiring diagram - as you can see, there are only 4 active pins.

I wouldn't get too concerned about the socket being wired for more....

Is this , cheap part, tested as a good replacement for my 2003 4200 coupe'?

Where did you get the drawing from, and which model and year did it refer too?
Still find it mighty strange that they would fit a relay base for a 5 pin relay, and a specific 5 pin relay, when a regular 4 pin relay would be easier and cheaper....or....does the 5 pin relay have a better duty cycle compared to a 4 pin and hence why it was selected, with a matching base to suit?

No reason why a 5 pin should have a better duty cycle. It's just a four pin where the normally closed connection is bought out to a pin.

Equally no reason *not* to use a 5 pin base. Cost difference will be zero and a 4 pin will fit just as well.

What is odd is why that relay has the smaller pins.

But it's just that. Odd. I'd grab any relay lying around with the caveat that I'd want the highest amperage I could sensibly get my hands on. Certainly greater than 30A

As with so many things, I am in a minority :)

It's from the Maserati Workshop Manual for the CC gearbox, for all M138 Coupe & Spyder cars, that section apparently for all model years. No idea why there's a 5-pin relay in the cars though - it's possible there was another function envisaged (detection of the relay contact position perhaps?), but according to the schematic it's not used.

No one yet has answered the question..have you removed 5pin Tyco Relay and dropped in 4pin Alfa part Without Modification??!.

I have ordered 5pin exact replacement part (V23134-B57-X153 .50amp.) Euro Car parts £8.50 saves a lot of problems.
Those that swear 4pin is normal can order Alfa part.

It was fitted to Loz's car which was sold to Athol (Outrun) who sold it on again after doing all sorts of Euro trips in it so I assume its still in there as Loz (a mate of mine) never told me he replaced it.

Stewart, you got a link for that, can't find it on their website, or did you mean Eurospares???

Can only find these:

This is the upgraded Bmw relay,my local Euro car parts branch should have it into stock tomorrow , he is going to mail me photo so that I may confirm that the 5pin configuration is the same as the Tyco part that is fitted to my Spyder.

If all checks out I will post photo in the morning, then those that want to change to 4pin and perhaps muck about with pins an pin lengths can do so.those that want upgraded drop in 5pin 50amp can go to ECP and spend £8.50 for new relay..

a big DoH.... my module that holds the relay and 2 fuses is the opposite way round. i removed the 2 fuses and layed them down in order of removal - this allowed me acces to remove the relay...

the issue is the fuses have been mixed up and now Im not sure which slot the 20A and 30A go in :frusty6:

the manual shows [fuse | fuse | relay] but the car has [relay | fuse | fuse]

lucky the forum came to the rescue again.... found this from Matt

Is there a correct procedure for changing the relay ie power off switch, change relay, power on? I am reading horror stories and don't want to create an issue where there isn't one!
