Brexit Deal

This is a perfect demonstration of three key Remainer myths:
  • that people who voted Leave simply got it wrong, rather than expressing a real opinion
  • that a huge number of people who voted Leave regret it and want to change their minds
  • that politicians and economists (as long as they are pro-EU) have the same kind of 'expertise' as doctors
The first is insulting, the second is almost certainly untrue, and the third is definitely untrue. I am confident that a second referendum (if asking the same question) would increase support for Leave.

If Remainers could grasp that these are myths, they would have some chance of formulating a strategy to deal with the Brexit situation.

I think the point is a bit more subtle than that.

To me it says, ok let's leave the EU. OK, we've looked at leaving the EU and it's much more difficult than it appears, and it will most likely cost lives, bring a return to the Troubles in NI (already brewing), and raise the cost of living for everyone. OK, decision time.....

1. Let's not bother with it cos it's too hard.

2. Let's do it anyway even though we know it's very likely to be ruinous.

Worth reading. Parliament brought this on themselves. They’ve had 3 years to deliver and failed miserably. What difference would a few more days make?

Great read - not something I would have expected to read in the Guardian - and absolutely spot on, and in doing so the Commons have failed to deliver on the democratic vote of the British people. So prorogation is, arguably, now the only way to deliver democracy on this matter.

That's (probably) the most common misconception. It wasn't about 1984, it was about 1948....

It was about Orwell's prediction that society would collapse by 1950, and in the novel he postulated that basically the UK (Airstrip One) even though under US rule would effectively be as a Soviet state, ie control and propaganda. Much like Burgess with A Clockwork Orange a lot of writers thought that the Sovs would win out, if you read ACO there's lots of Russian words and slang in there; horror show/Khorosho/good, Tolchocking/Tolchok'/punching, Yarbles/Yabloka/Apples like eggs, a euphemism for testicles....

I quite enjoyed ACO, though never read it again (unlike 1984) . I often wondered if you could use that blend of languages to teach.

Great book. Movie was awesome as well, but not something I'm going to plan to watch again in a hurry

I know what I get if we stay - what do I get if we leave?

A glorious future with massive aircraft carriers with no planes and leaks, no foreigners, US style Health Care, chicken full of chemicals, spray cheese, our Empire back, no gays, IRA/PIRA/OIRA bombs again, 260,000 pensioner expats forced to return, GM food, no health and safety, no minimum wage, zero unemployment (cos everyones on zero hour contracts doing zero hours so no unemployed), Victory Gin, Two Minutes Hate, basically a pile of *****....

Oh, control of our borders (which we already have) and no more unelected bodies (which we now have).
