Good progress all around, by the looks of it. The fittest car forum in the world!

Well, not good progress from me - I've done sod all this week on account of having had a stinking git of a cold. Today was my first day feeling closer to normal and I clocked up 17.8k steps, 12.8km and 11 floors including 119 'brisk' minutes of walking. It was all in London so I've doubtless inhaled several grams of noxious shite, mind.

All being well, tomorrow I shall be back on the rower and the weights. Jon, I'll be ordering a set of those cards you have. They look very good at ensuring variety with the resistance work.

PS, Newton - epic!

Right then
Cycling today on my Mountain Bike around the local fields when a thought occurred.
I am usually in one gear (not many hills on my route) for 90% of the journey and I need to pedal briskly against a low resistance gear to maintain a constant speed.
Is this better or worse or no difference to a different gear with more resistance to pedaling and a less brisk action?

Depends what you mean by better I think?

Most research shows that there is less overall stress on the body and your muscles if you maintain a highish cadence (85-90rpm) and an easier gear, as opposed to having really grind away at a harder gear and lower cadence. This stacks up in real life and is why its easier to cycle up a hill at low speed in a low gear (with your legs going round like crazy), as opposed to going up it at the same low speed but having to stand up and really push hard against a much harder gear ratio,

This is why lots of experienced cyclists seem to have their legs going round super fast, and almost look like they are making no effort (when actually they are pumping out huge amounts of power)

However, at the end of the day you need to expend a certain amount of energy to move the bike forward and to counteract the effects of gravity and friction, etc, and therefore if the speed were the same in either case, I think the energy expended would be equal.

So it depends if you want it to feel like hard work or not

You might want to get yourself a heart monitor watch. Fairly inexpensive nowadays. There are exercise techniques that keep your heart rate in zones, fat burning, cardio etc.
One of the above will get your heart moving faster and you'll be able to tell which and use it depending on your goals. I suspect on the flat and in a low gear you'll be in the cardio zone. High gear- fat burning.
For example most bodybuilders/muscley types do very little cardio (High heart) rate stuff as it tends to burn the muscle they are creating as well as fat. Not what they want.
As a result they do lots of walking which keeps the "fat burning" process going whilst maintaining as much new muscle as possible.
Regardless of what gear you use what you are doing will be benefitting your overall health and fitness so its positive :auto182:

This is the video I saw a while ago about cadence - grinding vs. spinning

I've just been to the gym in work. The exercise bikes have an ftp test facility. I daren't do that in front of people so will need to wait until a quiet empty time.

Brilliant! Well done, Jon. My 52 cards of dumbbell exercises arrived today but I'm still shaking off this sodding bloody cold so all I've done is look at them. I've got some catching up to do with the rest of you.

Dave - will the gym be a regular spare-time haunt now you're in Denmark? Tough choice between that and the bars.

Morning all,

Sunday morning weigh in for me, and the stats on the doors are:

1st Jan - 91.5kg
6th Jan - 90.2kg
12th Jan - 88.7kg
19th Jan - 87.5kg
27th Jan - 86.7kg

This is pretty close to 5kg overall, which is 11lbs. However, the even better news is I have just measured myself as well, and the numbers there are

Neck - 16 3/4” (was 17.5”)
Waist - 36 inches (was 37”)
Gut (or Jeremy Clarkson belly) - 41” (was 44.5”)

All of that makes good reading, and the slight slow down in rate of weight loss is probably a good thing as it will encourage me to not let bad habits like snacking on chocolate to creep back in.

Weekly weigh in time: 12st 6 down from 13st 4 at the beginning.

Nearly a stone lost since Jan 1st, just from cutting out the booze!! 4kg in new money.

12lbs is 5.5kg? You’re selling yourself short there... fantastic result though!

[QUOTE = "Dan !, Bericht: 669202, lid: 301"] Gelukkig nieuwjaar!

(Fotografisch bewijsmateriaal is optioneel!)

Ciao Han

Allow me to Google translate Stevie:

Top bit is Dan's opening post.

Han says:

Whow, there must be 30 kilos for my vacation this summer to Bella Italia, how can I participate?

Am 58, always sedentary work, not enough exercise, but something has to happen, otherwise I'm dead in a few years, many colleagues and friends lost the last 2 years, Bizar.

What do I have to do to go along with this good action, hear from you.

Ben 180 cm
130 kilos
Abdominal circumference .. haha Too much.

Drink almost no Beer, more Rosé, so above sugar.

Ciao Han

Han, jump in mate, the more the merrier loosing weight with the forum, between us we have already lost the equivalent of a small adult!
