As Geoff says, we need to break this back down to the various issues, decide which we are willing to give a bit on and then try to work from their.
For a bit of fun, let’s take each of the issues in turn and list the pros and cons.
BUT
- If you would prefer to remain in the EU you can only list the downsides of the issue
- If you want to leave the EU you can only list the benefits to the U.K. on that issue.
This will only work as a useful exercise if we take it seriously. So.
Free Movement
To me the downsides to the UK of this are:
To some degree there may be a reduction in jobs available to U.K. residents.
In areas where non-local people work in seasonal business (fruit / veg picking / sports direct etc) there has been an increased demand for services such as the NHS which impacts residents.
I’m not going to count shady people coming into the country because we are not in schengen so we have border controls and so that, to me is an enforcement issue.
Can anyone else on the remain side think of any more?
Who from the Leave side wants to list the benefits?
Ok Zep Here are the benefits of remaining from a leavers perspective.
No initial economic impact on either side ......held back for a rainy day.
Apparantly, shared “security” data will continue with the Eu. This will be In addition to the excellent Us data we already recieve on WMD's. Thus our island and its borders will remain safe whilst enabling us to pick wars with far weaker countries that have oil. Resulting migrants from those future wars will maintain the benefits of council houses upon arrival to the UK. So win win.
Ireland will not have an excuse go to war with itself. Eu fishermen will continue to be forbidden from catching 'red herring' in Irish waters.
Geoff will not have a lorry car park outside his front door with migrants escaping from it and knocking on his door to go to the loo,
We get to join the European army when it’s formed. Our military vehicles with their forward gears compliment the reverse bias of Eu ones.
We get to continue to watch Farage in the Eu Parliament encourage others that remaining is a great idea.
We accept all future Eu laws that come out so will be party to the new “automatic speed limiting cars” in 2022. Ie far safer roads
We don’t fight Spain over Gibraltar ( unless Mays deal accepted)
Our fishermen will remain as happy as they are now, Irish red herring will still be on the menu and we don’t fight France over fishing rights ( unless Mays deal accepted)
We don’t bail out Greece (unless Mays deal is accepted)
The Pound should increase in value making foreign goods cheaper.
No foreign visas required for foreign visits.
We will continue to accept our migrant quota enabling lazy Brits to continue to avoid doing low paid jobs they dont want to fill.
“Remaining” shows that democracy is alive and well in Europe and not fiddled as previously suspected.
We can continue to enforce regime change and export democracy around the world with the moral high ground.
We can attend Junckers leaving do as presumably we’ll get an invitation where we’ll be able to “have some cake and eat it”
We will all be spared from the “special place in h3ll “ previously reserved for us.
Our vote prospects at the Eurovision Song Contest will improve dramatically
The Uk political scene remains unchanged-current Mp's rewarded for the excellent job they are doing. New rules will mean future majority votes will be subject to overrule by the minority/ Mp's if it suits. Status quo secure for generations.
SMDRP will cease to exist and the forum will be spared my drivel.
We get to continue to pay billions in levies to the Eu for the all of the above benefits.
Not a bad attempt on behalf of SMUPPITS
