Why bother owning a Maserati?

Popped to the supermarket the other day to get provisions and I did the usual thing of parking well out of the way, but just as I was driving into the bay it happened a little hatch-back reversed into the bay in front of me, so I consciously left a reasonable gap incase the driver loaded a trolley full of shopping before I returned. Anyway out gets a rather prim looking elderly lady wearing a focused expression and walks straight around to the back of her car and starts staring at the gap between us. Thinking I might have offended her in some way I got out and enquired whether everything was okay, to which she responded saying "Oh yes, I spotted the Trident in my rear-view mirror and just had to come and take a look at the Grill of a Maserati"

We both smiled knowingly and went about our business... Just goes to show that for every heathen there's a believer, and sometimes not who you'd expect.

I thought about buying a Maserati before but never did. And I have regretted it. The sale of my 996 has ground to halt but I am not letting such matters put me off this time. I looked at a 4200 cc a while ago and thought WOW! The outside aswell as the inside. And coming from a 996 you will know how basic that is.

Thanks for the comments. In the mean time I have got some insurance quotes which have come out quite reasonable. I have looked into the costs and problems of 4200's but I did not want to become too OCD as this would probably put me off.

What costs....what problems....urban myths........

Supercar ownership means pro rata a higher outlay either initially or as wear and tear and/or age take their toll..........simples....:)

Brendan,

I did similar. Years ago now (AndyK can vouch just how long ago!), I was looking for a 4200. I'd previously had an M3 and ended up giving up on the 4200, having been pipped to the one or two I'd fancied. I loved the M3, but there was a constant nagging at me....to the point that when I sold the M3, there was nothing other than a Maserati to take its place. So far (18 months or so), I havent regretted it for one second.

Good luck with the search, as Parisien says, LOADS of useful info on here so do ask!

Woody I would be interested to know how you rated the M3 compared to the Maser. I had a E46 M3 and found it quite tail happy quite different to my 996

Pulled up on the A3 Services at Wisley, parked next to one of those enormous new XF Jags whos owner needed to open both drivers and passenger doors fully (he was an incredibly large chap!) and took up two car parking spaces, nearly denting my 3200 as he did so.
He was very apologetic and made a comment about how expensive it would have been if he had damaged my car, yes it would have been as I would have had every penny I could out him, but likewise his 60 plate fully loaded Jag retails at c£60K at a guess, my 10 year old 3200, a fifth of that. The conversation evolved into bhp figures, 0-60 times, turbos (both of them) V8 engines and the growl from the exhaust when I started her up, he was amazed at the car, stunned by its looks, gobsmacked at its age and dumbfounded it was worth a fifth of his £60K Jag.

Needless to say a flash of lights and a wave as I passed him some 2-3miles later, another Jag owner converted - but he needed to lay off the pies to fit in a masser!..........his wife/female partner on the other hand......................very tidy!!....................would look good in anything / nothing!

Sorry I digress...........................

Hi Brendan,

Sorry, just noticed this.

Did you have the RTAB's done on the M3? They're a known weakness and massively change the handling characteristics of the car, if worn.

In terms of comparing to two, my E46 was a cab, so perhaps not the best to compare to a hard-top Maserati. Both cars have an enormous amount of plus points and the M3 is an incredibly accomplished car. I though it drove very well and seemed to have endless power - a great car, and a very difficult car to beat for the money.

In terms of the drive, the M3 was a far better car than I am driver. I had an SMG and I think the gearbox is probably more accomplished than the CC in my GranSport, though I love the blip the GS does on down-shifts. I never really drive 10/10ths in either, but don't ever recall the M3 being anything but a great drive, even as a 'Wendy house'.

The GS on the other hand.....while I don't think it's quite as complimentary towards the driver, it's a great drive! There are a couple of things that don't fill you with confidence - the car can tramline a little on poor roads (mind, the M3 did too) and the CC gearbox, while superb 99% of the time, can do the odd funny thing. The GS feels a heavier car than the M3 too (though I've never checked if it is). With the V8 vs. flat 6, I guess the drive depends on personal preference. The M3 always felt like you were flying when you wanted to - it really did feel quick. The GS on the other hand, feels slightly less stressed when pushing on - that's probably just the lovely V8 though.

As I'm pretty tall, I would say the driving position in the M3 was slightly better. The GS is probably, oddly, slightly better for passengers, but for me, I'd like some more headroom. It's not bad, but a couple more inches of headroom wouldn't go amiss.

Overall, both are great cars, but I prefer the GS. It has its faults, I'm sure, but the BMW was a little too bland. Truly lovely, and a great car, but it was a little bland.

The GS on the other hand, I just love it. I love popping open the garage and looking at it. I love that you don't see them around. I love that people, generally, are interested to know what it is, it makes people interested in my interest (which is pretty unique for me!). I love that friends not into cars comment on it - they never did that with the M3 or the cars before. I love that it's different - it has character. I love coming back to the car when it's parked in town or at a petrol station. I love opening up the doors, smelling the leather, and then settling in....getting the three bleeps to say the NavTrack is detected, then pressing the start button and hearing the V8 roar into life......as Loz famously says on here, you really do need a pot of Nivea to keep the smile wrinkles at bay.

In short, both cars are better cars than I am driver and I dont think you could ever really get the most out of them on the roads,.... but while I really really like the M3, I love the GS.

Pointless keeping score Frank. If we were more into M3s this would be a BM forum!

It seems, to own a Maser, you need a strong woman! My wife lets me know, all the time, how strong she is. Difficult to get a word in. My trousers no longer fit! Pass the pink paint.....

M3's are now in the hands of our blingy 'fast car' brigade. All 20 inch super cromed wheels, bling badges, 8000 watt sound system, and even [sigh], under lights!
A tight M3, is a great car to drive though. The straight six produces 100bhp per litre. Genuine horses too!!

As the official forum pie eater general I can inform you that the acceptable pie to Maserati seat ratio is 6 per week. This is allowing for the option of a Yorkshire on a Sunday with the roast.
