Where has it been kept? If at 12-14 degrees constant it should still be ok. If kept a room temp all this time it will not be at its best to put it mildly. Here’s hoping :)
Thanks Bebs. Unfortunately, the bottle had been kept at room temp, so had a fragrance of musk and vinegar notes! Not a crowd pleaser as it turned out. Oh well, the cheap Chianti we opened afterwards helped to wash away the flavour! :D

Old wines (over 40 years old) are like old people. For the better they have lost their vivacity and part of their alcohol but can acquire a beautiful amber color and a soft transparency. They tell their memories, they have a seduced charm. They can also be half dead, or even totally dead waiting to be composted ;). I opened a St Emilion 1975 (millésime) last year, luckily, I got the first case.

Sorry to hear that.
It’s always a bit of a gamble with wines of that age, even if they have been stored properly. I opened a magnum of CNDP Domaine Marcoux 1998 new years eve and it hadn’t faired well and was poured down the sink. Luckily I had a standby magnum of claret ready so all was not lost.

It really is a loss. Usually bottles of Châteaunef-du-Pape keep well, but in fact it all depends on storage and, as with cars, the number of owners to whom the bottle has belonged. At the end we just buy a bottle label and possibly a nice wooden package.
I have forgotten bottles that I bought new in the cellar under the country house because I don't have the courage to be disappointed by going to get one to open it (I should have made a list).

That CNDP came directly from the domaine along with cases of bottles and some jeroboams, straight into my temperature controlled cellar so in theory perfect provenance. Suspect I was unlucky with that particular mag.
