Opening this 40yr old bottle today for a New Year's family celebration. Normally wine doesn't last that long in this house, so the fact we've kept this bottle in tact since my dad brought it back from France in the late '80s is pretty incredible! Question is: after all this time will it be vintage or vinegar?109993

Where has it been kept? If at 12-14 degrees constant it should still be ok. If kept a room temp all this time it will not be at its best to put it mildly. Here’s hoping :)

We enjoyed a bottle of 1963 port this year, which from a storage point of view had not really been cared for, and after being moved from one kitchen cupboard to another started leaking through the cork - it was due to be opened in April 2023 for my 60th.

Anyway, opened on Boxing Day expecting disappointment, but Lady Luck was shining and it was sublime

20% alcohol helps keep it in good shape despite temps. Vintage ports are generally more hardy because of the alcohol level.

Can you all find Glen Ord single malt there? Not that I drink anymore...but there was a time I could get my hands on it regularly. The first time I opened a bottle, I sat down with a glass and a book. Hours later, when I tried to stand...well, I realized that someone had consumed the entire thing in one sitting...

It does evaporate unless very carefully monitored. I find the same with many malts

And yes, you can get it in Rightpondia ;)

Yeah...did love a good single malt. No fan of blends. But don't think I ever drank one as imperceptibly smooth on Leftpondia.
