I’m a member of several car Marque forums, and all seem to end up with the political and rant type threads.

I think this is more to do with the times we're living in at the moment.
Politics is all encompassing at the moment and it would also seem that the whole world is angry about something or other as well.

You can't get away from it, it's now part of life.

Would banning ranting and politics help the forum? I'm not so sure (not my decision anyway) but it's affecting everyone right now whether you like it or not.
The media pretty much control politics, and this forum is part of that media, albeit social.

... and yet anywhere that encourages a continuation of political discourse must by implication seek only to exacerbate the ubiquity of such debate, deepening your dismay that the media controls politics.

Oh, such a tangled web we have woven! Cometh the spider, cometh the reckoning!

However, I find that the vitriol and personal abuse are far worse on most of them than on here, where in the main the content is friendly and light hearted.

The AMOC has gone into meltdown over a similar matter with the result being a stitched up AGM with a new management committee of old guard members who have a mistrust and dislike of social media wanting to overmoderate the forum and shut out such discussion.

As a result, many of the main contributors have set up an alternate forum outside the club, and the club one has become a far less interesting place with an absence of humour and debate. If I just want to know how to fix my sprocket on my lever it’s fine, but I can look that up on Google or YouTube.
Do make sure you fix your sprocket though. You don't want your lever falling off.

This is a great forum. The knowledge is literally second to none and given in good grace. It’s made owning a Maserati more of a pleasure for me.

The banter, politics, rants etc. don’t bother me as they are easy to ignore. Some members probably don’t realise how the language they use and assumptions they make about experiences of life have the effect of excluding casual browsers who might be put off by the banter. Then again, I don’t think you can force friends to speak to each other in a certain way just so that others might not feel alienated. I guess it’s just what happens.

Where I do draw a line, and I support the mods in doing so, is discriminatory language. I think the mods have dealt with that quite firmly on the odd occasion it was necessary in recent times.

Not much I would change. Just be aware if you want to attract more people, from a wider group, it might mean changing the character of the forum a bit.

Hi,
Happy to be aligned with the majority of this poll.
I personally enjoy coming here and read point of views also on other topics than maserati technics. Imho, if a group of people share a common interest then they are more prompt to discuss on different subjects, should they be conflictual by raising emotions. For example I liked reading your point of views about UKs politics on the brexit for example even if I felt no legitimacy to participate (or worried to raise conflict...)
Lastly I m happy to see a lot of you like a little French car or French wines:D which continues to entertain the multi centenary love-hate relationship of our 2 nations (am I being politic here:eek:?)
Please continue!

I appreciate what you are trying to do here but it is a tough call. I don't mind all the non-Maserati threads in themselves and I only ever ignore people due to their style of communication rather than content - everyone should be allowed an opinion.

Increasingly the threads have nothing to do with Maserati and the top posters and indeed many mods don't own anything from Modena...or even Turin. Add to that the fact that the forum has not really attracted that many people who own Maserati's newer than a QPV or original GranTurismo then there is a chance that it just becomes a semi private club for the 30-40 people who know each other and as a forum it drifts away like many have as people join owners groups on social media platforms. Your call but it is not easy to fix even if you conclude it needs fixing.

If you want to attract more people to the forum, then offer something that can't be got from outside the forum. I like all the conversations, but would I want to travel to one location in the UK only for my car to have works done? probably not. Do I feel it is necessary to travel that far for a current rates for works on my car? probably not. Would I look on here to buy a car that's been looked after from an enthusiast? probably yes. Are the conversations on here fun and interesting. Yes.

That is exactly why we asked the questions, to understand what the majority are looking for. The result is quite interesting.

We believe that there are many unique things on the forum. The diverse range of views, the opportunities for life affirming meets and trips like the centenary trip to Modena or the recent epic journey across the spine of Europe, the sharing of fixes and experience, the willingness of complete strangers to help a fellow owner in need. The opportunity to make life long friends.

These are the things that brought all of us here, and we want that to attract new members.

There is absolutely no requirement to travel any distance for anything, so not sure what you are driving at (geddit) there.
