I doff my cap to you both, I really do. If it weren't for each other, neither of you would have made it. One of you would have been arrested for killing locals and the other would have had to bail him before leaving for Blightie toot suite. That would have left a stuffed toy with a coke habit and a push iron to complete the job, which wouldn't have happened, so kudos.... Really, Kudos.

And just in case you forget, and to encourage the final push to the target. The eejit in the Beemer with the gob of a docker and hooligan tendencies is not just that, he's a father and he lost his wonderful son to a dreadful desease. That is why they did this amazing thing, so please make it mean something.

Wow. Powerful words, Miles. Few of us can begin to imagine the loss of a child. Ben and Sue work tirelessly to raise money and awareness for this cruel disease so that others may be saved the same tragedy.

I urge anyone who has yet to donate to do so, however large or small their contribution. Every penny will count towards such a significant sum being raised by this monumental effort.

+1(I was moved) - lets get Matt (and his support crew) to their target - a tenner here and there will do it!!!!!!!!

Amazing! Well done Matt. An awesome achievement.

This thread has also kept me entertained.

I assume when you get back you won't want to ride a bike for quite some time.

Well done Guys

Never doubted Matt would not finish the ride. He has been brilliant and just wish I had been able to do it with him. Well done Benny for having to look at Matt's builder's bum for 12 days

I am actually considering going out tomorrow, 2 days off and the body is wanting to be excerted again.

On the road bike, the front chain ring, chain and rear cassette are scrap, missing teeth etc, its taken one **** of a pounding. The mileage was at 1500 before I left.

What sort of cheap chain ring have you got?

Mine is in my 6,500 mile and hasn't been changed once.

Running it dry Matt? Problem with modern gear sets is most riders are spoilt for choice and tend to just change the front gears, seldom the rear and if you look at the angles the chain is pulling through it puts massive wear on the sides of the soft aluminium chainsets. Rear spindles with more than five cogs are to blame, how often did you actually just move one rear gear? or sit in the middle of the rear spool? A well designed train will get you from almost 1:1 (1:1.28 actually) 32T to 25 to 1:6.2 56T to 9T Why bother with 7 or more rear gears on the back if you are only going to skip them...?

Its due to grit. We had to clean the gears every day and reoil but there is so much grit on the French roads it gets flicked up and sticks do the oil. You can guess the rest.

The bike was serviced a week before I went and was royally told off for the dirty state of the gears. I was told then that they would make it but would be on the outer limits of wear.

The rear cassette should be changed every 1000 miles along with the chain so I have done pretty well to get 2.5k out of it. New parts on order for approx £100 so very reasonable for Campag and FSA.

The bike has been hammered, 1000 miles and 30k feet of hard hills so that equates to riding up Everest (in elevation) in 12 days.

Morning guys. Just got back home and finally finished the trip off. Overall, it was a never to be forgotten experience with a good mate for a very worthy cause. Matt was a complete star (but don't tell him!) and you guys have been fantastic with your generous support for the BCRT. I'm off to bed now as its my turn to be completely kn4ckered after driving just short of 1100 miles in 26 hours. Have a good one and thanks again, you are awesome.

...and a public thank you to Benny for making this trip possible. I would have given up mid way if it were not for his constant p!ss taking about me being too old, too fat and too moaning to do it!

A worthwhile cause and memories that will last a lifetime.

That bear on the other hand can **** off!
