I agree. Stinking hot the last few days. I've been admiring the toys of the flesh kind down by St Kilda beach. Where was the pic taken? Sorrento?

Thanks for that, I need the occasional reminder of my life goals!
Moving to Australia had slipped to the "In ten years time..." category, it's just moved up to "In five years time..."

(It's blowing a gale outside my window at the moment, wondering if the Oak Tree will be kind enough to fall into the road rather than on the house if it goes...)

Ha. Yeah, blowing a gale here too...... rain, wind and traffic back to the norm. How quickly the Christmas holiday's draw to an end.

Happy New Year all :)

Not sure I am enjoying the hot spell.
This afternoon I moved the mower I had left outside the back door to my garage only to find a brown snake curled up underneath.
Very deadly and very unusual in a suburban backyard.
Scared the living daylights out of me, but so glad it was me that found it not one of my kids.
Stephen
PS. I have an Aussie mate that married a girl from Newcastle (UK).
She refused to live in Australia because we have snakes, so they are now in New Zealand (no snakes in NZ).
Now I see her point.

Well, at least the cold and wet weather here does not facilitate these nasty bugs, spiders, snakes etc!!!

The brown snakes are around this summer and they are feisty little devils. Agood axe and a strong arm is what's needed. Having said that and knowing where you live I am very nervous as I haven't heard of browns being that far into suburbia. Hope your friend didn't move to Christchurch as that makes snakes easy to deal with!

Seeing a snake would scare the living **** out of me, what do you do if you see one? kill it or ring an animal society to collect/move it?

Don't talk about the wind, one of the aircraft I fly which was parked up with the aircraft engineers now looks like this,

completely heartbroken, it is most likely a write off. According to the tower it was lifted 30ft! by the wind then deposited thus. On the bright side no-one was hurt and the other one which had been lashed down by the pilots has not moved and is ok.

Geoff,
I have a sharp edged shovel leaning against the back wall of the garage now just in case!
Only Chelsworth Park separates our back garden from the Yarra River, so I am not totally surprised to see a snake, just surprised to see it up high on our block near the garage / house.
My friends live in Auckland, but a girl I work with went home to Christchurch to visit her family over the holiday period.
Such a beautiful city to have been destroyed; very sad not to mention the loss of life.
I hope 2012 is better for our Kiwi neighbours.

Adam,
There are snake wranglers one should contact, but who would waste the time if there is a sharp weapon nearby?
A friend with a large farm in the country simply shoots them with a shotgun.
We are not permitted to have guns & rifles in residential Australia, but it would have been handy yesterday.
I have no idea where it is now, so that is a worry.

An 80 year old female glider pilot crashed her glider here 2 days ago.
I bet there cannot be too many 80 year old ladies around the world flying (or crashing) gliders or other aircraft for that matter.
BTW; what sort of plane is that?

It looks like a Chipmunk. A primary RAF trainer for many years. I did my flying selection in them back in the 80s.
