What a nice chap, picked the Cyrus up on the way to York (**** in a bucket trip)

He said, do you want these, a pair of Quad 11L speakers on stands, thrown in for free

I imagine you considered that option for about 2 nanoseconds....

Not totally clear they'd be a good match for the Cyrus but.....

Suck it and see

Not sure who posted this now (I assumed @DLax69 ) but thanks to whoever it was. A fascinating, if heavy read:

Which I shall summarise

Lawd...not me, but flattered as it does seem like something I would post, @CatmanV2 !

Great read...and your summary is amazingly spot-on!Cat

I am utterly embarrassed by the fact that, in needing to shed some stuff due to one of my earlier divorces, I unloaded all of my original equipment and LPs and 45s. And I had some killer stuff, including first presses of Sgt. Pepper and London Calling and Scary Monsters...and my old man's collection of singles dating back to the 1950s. So I have only started to wade back into vinyl over the course of the last year or two.

But it also clarifies the whole "one man's trash" thing @Wack61 as I thought I was getting "out" at the "right time" ...CDs were ubiquitous, streaming hadn't really started (other than BowieNet...freaking genius) and I got pretty good coin from the record shop that bought everything. And, when a year or so later, that record store went out of business, I felt pretty smug...or, as smug as I could feel in that situation. Maybe "justified" or "smart" are better adjectives.

But I never ever ever got near as much enjoyment from iTunes on shuffle than I did from listening to Dark Side of the Moon through my ginormous padded, over-the-ear headphones as the needle wormed its way through the groove...

Well yes. That's just sick and wrong

C
It so is!!

It just seemed like the default way that folks would "host" things for so long. Like I said, I never bought one of those iPod things (also just not an Apple guy, in general...) but they were EVERYWHERE...

After adding a turntable to my system during lockdown it was an opportunity to pull out all the old vinyl that I had been carting around various house moves over the last 30 years. Vinyl is about the experience, I went through a painstaking process of cleaning every album before putting in back in its sleeve and adding an additional clear plastic cover "to protect an album that back in the day would have been thrown on to a turntable during a party and randomly put away after use often in the wrong sleeve). Once cleaned protected and arranged in a new storage cabinet I got the opportunity to play it. I still love getting the album out and admiring the artwork before I slide out the inner sleeve. If your lucky there is more material on that, artwork, lyrics or just photos once again to be admired before the LP is placed on the deck.

Even that process of that is an experience, open the turntable cover and place the album on the deck start it spinning and then run the anti static dust brush across it, then lift the arm to the start of the first track and slowly lower, that faint crackle as the needle finds the groove and then the music.

Awesome, it may or may not be better but its the experience and I love it

Well there's not much wrong with an iPod per se, but shuffle mode is for parties, not albums.

Awesome, it may or mat not better but its the experience and I love it

And who shall deprive you of that?

It's why I still have two typewriters (including one designed by Ghia)...and bought 4200s. The tactile, the levels of engagement, the analog aspects...

Agree wholeheartedly @zagatoes30 that liner notes and album art are a huge part of the immersive experience. And Chris, spot on with the album...play it the way the artist meant it to be played...!

Beautifully written Zagatoes, if I may say so....
A bit like turning the ignition key in your Maserati and letting the power on checks all happen. Only then, when the airbag light stops flashing turning the key further. Hairs on neck bristle in anticipation as the lubricant system charges itself up, the engine turning over a few times as you count. And then.... And then.... as anticipated the engine fires and erupts into the most magnificent sound. Even better that you had remembered. The precursor to a wonderful driving (listening?) experience.
Yup. Vinyl is a lot like a Maserati.

Anybody collect acetates of their favourite artist? I'm a big Judie Tzuke fan, here's some acetates., you can really only play them a few times before they deteriorate.

And this is where the conversation gets interesting: We step away from 'My Ghbili is better than your GT' (It's not BTW) and move to 'This makes me happy, and your choice makes you happy, and there is no better. Nor does your choice does imply an insult to me.

But let's not pre-judge each other ;)
