Saving a 3200 from the scrap heap!

Hi Guys,

New member here but always been a lover of the boomerangs but it was never the right time or money. Yesterday, I finally got one!

but first, here are my other cars

2000 XKR bought at auction as a "biohazard car"

Here she is all done, lowered and upgraded

Here is my 95 BMW 850Ci V12, bought her in 2019 after the owner dumped her in 2009

How I found one of my childhood dream cars

Iv also got a 69 Chevelle restomod, 72 Vette and a 92 Mercedes SL300-24

As you can see, im not one to shy away from a good project so here is my latest, scrolling FB marketplace one day and see the unmistakable boomerangs, contact the guy and arrange a viewing

2nd owner in the UAE, J-spec, 33ish thousand km, hasn't ran since 2017. Checked the usual stuff....sold as is where is. Agreed to a price and towed it over to my place

Most important thing to check although the previous owner was adamant that the belt has snapped hence the non-runner condition

Took all the panels off to drain the stinky old fuel and investigate

They just collapsed in my hand, time for fuel pumps, submersible lines, filters etc.

I was hoping somebody can decode the vin for me please

We all watch with interest. There is a lot of help on here and I think parts will be your biggest issue.

You would be surprised! Some are garage queens, others are daily driven with impeccable maintenance works and others are dumped

Parts is always an issue but you put up with it for the love of cars!

So far, ill need the internal fuel filter and rubber gasket that centers the pump and submersible lines from abroad and go from there

Probably been in storage for 2 years before being registered. Nothing unusual about that.

The panels of the 850 got me . Was it also a Gulf car ? It's amazing how much the panels has been eaten by corrosion in a seemingly dry environment. Maybe was left too close to the sea.
By comparison the Maserati bodywork appears solid.

Yep, Gulf spec...when I found it, it was parked close to the sea. Our summers reach 50-55c (122f-131f) with humidity around 70-100%

Surprisingly, the 3200 only has surface rust on the edges of the trunk which according to my research is common. The paint is faded on the hood, roof and trunk while the rest could use a paint correction, polish and ceramic coating to bring the shine back to life

Was it covered with a tarpaulin too? That’s a killer even in a desert.

The 3200 is well protected from rust. The steel is galvanised and has a polymer undercoat. On the underside of panels it has polymer protection. So a refresh of the paintwork is complex process.
The steel is exceptionally thin so damage repairs are sometimes not possible and always pretty tricky.
I admire your dedication bringing these old cars back to life.

Trouble is, once rust gets a foothold it's pretty rampant!
