You say that Dem but we've had two post 2000 Mercs that have both had rust issues and I have lost count of how many from that era i've seen looking super tatty. I think they were all at it back then!

Mercs from the 90s and the noughties are horrible...made cheaply and sold on the old rep they had...the new ones and the pre 90s were made better....my opinion ofcourse

Seen BMW's from 2000 plus with plenty of rust as well..SUppose its all down to how you look after them...

My 1991 Peugeot 205 has long gone to the great car park in the sky because of rust not unlike dickyb's 147. It does seem the Germans can do better rust protection.

Didn't realise ther was any metal in a 205. Certainy wasn't much on my BX GTi - mostly plastic.

There was certainly none remaining :)

Great car, I still miss it. And like dickyb it broke my heart to scrap it when it was so reliable and so much fun. Somehow it would have been easier to deal with if it had broken down and had to be carted away but driving perfectly well all the way to the scrapyard was painful.

That's exactly how I feel, it would have been far easier to accept if it had been rear ended or something, knowing that the car could be repaired (albeit at huge expense) makes it more difficult:(. I'll always have fond memories of my 145, had great fun in it, did some trackdays and some good road trips, it has been totally reliable contrary to Alfa's reputation. I wanted to keep it going to at least 200000 miles, when people asked what car I had and then went on about reliability etc when I told them, it was always really satisfying to say "well, actually its done 140000 miles and has never let me down..."

Maybe you should get someone else to drive it to the scrappy.

It still hurts me to remember handing the key over to the guy on the receptionist's desk as he asked 'where's it parked, is it drivable?'

'Yes, across the street, yes it's perfectly drivable, it's just faithfully driven me here.'

It was like I had taken the dog to the vets by pretending to take it out for a walk, I felt guilty and sad.

It's an awful feeling having to take a car in and end it's life, I have done it once, or twice and I would prefer not to. OH and a tip, never go back in to see them in the yard, it's soul destroying..!!

My dad had a Triumph 2.5PI saloon that he bought new, and drove to the scrap man 10 years later. Mechanically perfect, bodywork beyond economical repair due to rot.

Its particularly sad because my 145 has been in my family since new:( My father bought it new then I bought it from him when it was 3 years old. I won't be driving it to the scrappy, its worse than that, I have to break it myself then get the scrappy to collect whats left :(. I know if I sold it, someone else would break it so best to do it myself and make some money back and help others to live on.

The 145 came back on a trailer today from the car restorer, its only the 3rd car he's ever had in his workshop that hasn't been driven home. He said he kept looking at it trying to figure out how to save the car but it just can't be done without huge expense.

Picked up the 147 Ducati Corse last night, I think its going to be a licence loser! I never imagined a diesel could be that quick! With the sport button pressed its awesome! Handles well too. Very chuffed with it and I only paid what it would have cost to fix the 145 properly, doesn't make it any easier though. I'll post up some pics in the next couple of days.
