For a proper sense of occasion, try an Aventador.
Really honestly dislike those- I Think they are too big and too loud for the roads. I would honestly prefer a performante if given the keys to both - even though I appreciate they are V12 and more money.

I think the 458 is probably the best value Ferrari on the market! They appear to hold well and I actually think the styling has not aged too much!

I really agree with you. Bizarre isn’t it in this age when things seems to date so fast. If you compare the gallardo with a 458 (same era) it’s like comparing a grandfather clock and an Apple Watch. Everything tell me- looks, sound, engine , depreciation etc. The 458 is the smart choice. I have not often made smart choices in the past thought. And nor dare I say it do many forums members with their wonderful but non mainstream cars!

If 360/430 values are anything to go by, the 458 is bound to increase in value! It has remained steady for some time now and although it is not of the same category, I think the 458 could go the same way as the Mercedes SLS (a possible choice for you too)! Both cars imo represented a shift for both brands in terms of design, engine, handling etc. If I had the liquidity, a 458 would be a sounder investment than a house!

Find a car - soulmate.
If this is your main goal would going classic for a while fit the bill. E-Type roadster perhaps. Ok, it's not the latest & "greatest" billy big bo**ocks, there's plenty of those about, but in terms of style & class it would be hard to beat.

Iain,

Maybe the time has come for you to own a Porker...?

A 911 GT3 RS would be a nice fun car to drive if you don’t really need four seats any more...

I do occasionally look at Porsche’s on autotrader. I still can’t work out why the GTs interior is so much more special that the turbo. The turbo just seems so plain in comparison. Needs some contrast and more carbon etc. When they start getting into the really unique spec- they are touching on 458 territory though. I think around a no deal Brexit the prices may drop a little. There are a LOT of 458s that have been for sale for many months now. They just refuse to drop the price. I think some of them could be had for 5-10 less than advertised - especially outside the main dealer network

May sound like snobism, but after a big V8 in an Italian package the GT3 feels a little weak. Precise, but weak.

That’s interesting... I’ve never driven, or been in a GT3. A friend of mine has a Turbo S (996 I think) and it is ridiculously, scarily, fast .... so much so he lost his license within 12 months of owning it!

I guess it depends on what floats your boat... I’ve never wanted to own a Porsche, and probably never will as I don’t like the connotation I associate with them. They are however clearly fantastic driving machines...

I've found any Porsche I've ever driven or been in very very good bit almost on the edge of being a but too good almost sterile and vanilla. Never been in a GT of any sort though.

Not so much passion and doesn't have that indescribable je ne sais quoi feeling I tend to prefer on most cars.

Sounds odd maybe but I much prefer cars that are not as good as somehow that makes them all the better for it.

The new Supra to me seems like case in point. If they had made it much like the old car and maybe worse with bigger turbo etc. then I think it would have been a better car for it. Making it too samey to the Z4 makes it worse and all the worse for it and a missed opportunity to me.

I like that kind of flawed genius kind of character.

Many popular automotive journalist's such as Meaden, Harris, Catchpole and the like are all saying similar things now. Most modern sports and supercars are getting too samey, too powerful, too fast and too good....for the road. I tend to agree.

Point?

Try a vanilla 911 Carerra S with PDK. Especially try getting up to 60 and flooring the brake pedal. I don’t know what the G is, but it feels like your eyes will pop out.

A couple of my colleagues have one of those. Would rather have the M140. Just as fast and German.
