Named after Alfa type 158 (or 159) Racing car from some time ago

Ta. I Googled it in the end. The thing that was confusing me was I thought it was a sub-brand like Alfa-Sud so “Alfetta GTV” but Alfetta is the model. So it’s an Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV. You learn something new everyday.

Alfetta means “Little Alfa” and was originally used to refer to the Tipo 158/159 racer. This was developed for the pre war Voiturette (little car) formula, which then became eligible for Grand Prix racing. It had a supercharged straight 8, as you would expect for a small car.

My heart ached whenever I saw/heard one, but could never aspire to one.
So I settled for a Sprint Veloce.
I loved it to bits, literally, in the end a mound of rust on the drive with a screaming engine.
Ahhhh, the overrun rasp, the torque oversteer (only boot it on right hand bends) and she could hear me coming a mile away.

I loved my ‘sud, and for that matter my 33 16v. The ‘sud dissolved, but the 33 lived on for a long time. Sadly gone now. I will find another!

We had a 116 Giulietta (well two) as family cars. I soooooooo wanted a GTV 6. A boy at school's parents had one. Ended up with a 3l 116 Giulietta. But I think of all our Alfas Mrs C's Sud Sprint Cloverleaf was the most absolute fun (closely followed by the 145 Cloverleaf)
