If through your contacts over there you can link us to others that need a safe place, please let me know.
Will do Sam. for sure. To be honest, we've been having trouble getting things sorted even more locally. I'd also add that the (ahem) 'fee' to get a war-age male out of UA has now quadrupled to €20k.

In better news, our lot are sort of back at work a bit.

I'd not sure what I would do if this country came under attack. Stay and fight or pay a fee with hope.... What a situation to be in

Most Ukrainians simply don't have that kind of money. Those that do likely blew town before it all got crappy. For comparison, €20k in Kiev would be €60-80k in London. If you see what I mean.

Most Brits won't have £20k laying about. Can you imagine ringing your ifa, I need £20k quickly and get no response or a sorry, I'm taking your money and going myself.

The family we are talking to have no money to travel from Poland, hopefully we can find a charity to help - or I will buy tickets for them, we shall see.
Need the visa sorted first

We are beginning to think we will never find a suitable match after the latest attempt has failed.

I realise that our government needs no extra aptitude, nor instruction, in how to make a complete b@lls
of just about anything. That said, it's doing a brilliant job of failing to meet everyone's expectations, faster
than we can lower them. I wonder will this debacle claim another Home Secretary. I sincerely hope so.

Ok we are at the start of a new journey.
We have used the OPORA website to match to a Mother, her son and her mother ( so three generations !).
They are fleeing Russian occupied Norrhern Ukraine - they will head first to Ukrainian held territory and relative safety, before crossing to Poland and awaiting the outcome of visa applications.
It’s not safe to stay where they are, yet others have been shot trying to leave
And we have seen the news of what can happen when they retreat
it’s ‘kin inhumane and unbelievable in the modern Western World.
We will start the applications this evening and finish them tomorrow.
It’s then a waiting game - weeks apparently…….
OPORA will help them with free travel from Poland to the UK- we will meet them wherever they enter the U.K.
We have some minor preparations this end, removing junk from the spare rooms, a little remedial decoration to make sure things are ship shape fore them.
I am going to buy a TV for one of their rooms and replace the TV in the garden cabin (I gave away the last one ).
We may have to swap out one of the double beds and buy two singles, depending on what they feel most comfortable with.
As things progress I will update.
I am already feeling responsible for them - it’s only now that they have somewhere to come to they can leave, but leaving is dangerous

We completed the Visa applications last night, what a nightmare process, but all done now. They can take weeks and weeks but there are instances where they come through quickly.

A message from them today explains they have curfews and back outs to contend with, electric went off for most of today, shops are close to empty.

They are very fearful of a Russian retreat

They are right to be nervous. Retreating armies seldom behave well on their way out. Am I right to think that in the Winter War the Russian army opened fire on Finnish soldiers that were packing up their weapons in the minutes leading up to the ceasefire in 1940?

You would think the government only wants to appear to be helping. Mustn't be anything in it for them allowing Ukrainian refugees in. You would think give them a safe place first sort out the paperwork later .

We completed visas for a family of 3 to come to us, it’s been 8 days but could take weeks.
The council have now been in touch and we will provide documents for the DBS checks this weekend and have arranged for a gas safety certificate (apparently this is a requirement).
Fingers crossed they will make it here before the end of the month.

tThia trying to match ti families shoukyuse the the OPORA website

It is a sh1tshow, and to some extent deliberately so, but 'safe place first' is Poland. A key reason why the other EU countries are making a show of being freely welcoming is that they have no other choice as they have open borders.

Actually, we should be going out of our way to welcome refugees from Ukraine who are NOT ethnic Ukrainians, who seem to be having a particularly hard time. We should probably be prioritising them to rescue them from the white nationalist cabal that is the EU.

One of the families we tried to match with were mixed race (African father, Ukrainian mother) and you are quite right, skin colour really affects the way you are treated in Ukraine. In the end they went to France.

Well, they had better hope Macron wins, then!
