Opening up our homes to Ukrainians

I am certainly not questioning the motives of those on here. As most of you I’ve met and hold you in high esteem

But questioning the motives of the country in general.

Brexit (I believe at least) has made our nation rather insular in how it sees foreigners.

Those who land on the beaches in Kent are seen as illegals just trying to get benefits whereas Ukrainians need and are deserving of our help.

Controversial post. Which I think I know the answer to. But interested in others opinions.

Why are people willing to take in Ukrainian refugees. But not refugees from Afghanistan, Somalia, Syria etc etc etc?
Simple, history, people are very aware of a Trojan Horse.

The Afghans refugee’s are costing the government £1.2 million a day and asylum seekers another £3.5 million a day

The Ukraine’s are saying that they don’t want to settle in the UK, plus they are actually coming escape a war where their lives are at risk, the ones that are illegally coming to the UK from France are not, most are young men between the age of 20 to 30.

it will be interesting how this plays out.

But the line churned out time after time (previously) that refugees should seek asylum in the safest country they come to.
Pretty sure that came from Nigel Farage though.

Asylum vs. temporary refuge for women and children from a besieged European state very close to our borders ( we are still Europeans).

I would say it's probably because our values, beliefs and culture are alot closer aligned to those of Ukraine than the middle east

There is no question that many of the people being smuggled into the UK are economic migrants. They have no right to be here.

On a side note. If anyone is part of an aid convoy and is short drivers, I'm in. Even if it means driving into Ukraine.
I've offered my help to a Yorkshire based aid convoy, but I know next to nowt about cricket, so that may be a non-starter :p

Obviously, we the hosts get £350 to accommodate refugees, but as for subsistence, the refugee gets an allowance too. If I find time today, I'll look into this. I do know that they are allowed to work and that in itself is a bureaucratic mare as they need to get registered with a NI number. This involves making an appointment with the local job centre and having an address (yours will do).

It’s already been mentioned in the press that Sainsburys, M&S etc will be offering jobs to the Ukrainians when they arrive.

Has anyone checked this out with your home insurance/mortgage company if you have one?

I would be surprised if insurance does not cover being allowed to have guests stay, and that is going to be the status of any refugee.

I have linked up with the local Ukrainian community through the community site Nextdoor.

You can choose your local area and there is bound to be local Ukrainian families who with either have family and friends they could introduce you to sponsor, or provide support to you if you get allocated someone, which will be important and helpful.

The lady we have messaged has not been able to make contact with her family for over 7 days - can’t imagine what is going through her mind or worse still, what her family are going through.

You may remember that I posted a link to a Ukrainian blogger from you tube a while ago, well she has fled from Ukraine to Poland, she has now left Poland and is in Denmark, but has decided she wants to come to UK as she speaks English, and her daughter speaks better English than Ukrainian. As I understand it, her party consists of Olga, her 2 children, and 2 parents, I wondered if anyone on here has enough room to accommodate that many?
