Following on from what Scaf and others have posted on another thread. My family and I are also thinking of doing the same. Perhaps we could have a dedicated thread to discuss our experiences etc of the process and share advice....just a thought.

Received the link but it must be inundated (or it is hosted on a laptop in Marsham St). Will try much later on.

Done now.

When COVID hit we ended up taking a nurse and Dr in short term as their landlords kicked them out out of fear of catching COVID off them (Separate cases).

We are now considering this (Me more so), but acutely aware that it is likely that the person arriving will have faced significant mental trauma, be separated from their circle of support and in need of more support than they are likely to get of the NHS or LAs given we are unable to support the current caseloads.

I can’t really imagine what state they might be in, which just adds to need for everyone who thinks they can help and has the space does so, does so.
My wife volunteers for the vulnerable already supporting young families in nee, so has some experience, and we have supported members of our family with mental health needs over the years so hopefully we have our eyes wide open. Supporting an alcoholic as they headed to their rock bottom opens your yeses somewhat.
My daughter works in mental health in the community we live (but does not live with us) so she can help support us, I imagine a good support network will grow quite quickly.
We are both DBS checked as well which may help with the screening process.

Theres overwhelming interest it seems, I've not been able to register.

Seems odd they are just expecting accommodation, you would think food etc would be a requirement too. If this happens I know my wife wouldn't see anyone go hungry.

Outstanding, for you chaps to step up.
Unfortunately, here in the US, there is no program to allow them into the country. Now if they could fly into Mexico City, pay some coyote $20k each to be smuggled across the border, well then everything is fine! Welcome! here's some free stuff, and would you like to sign up for welfare, and free health care, while we send you wherever you want to go...@#%$&&(!!!

Agree - you would have thought being prepared to feed your guest would be a basic requirement, we would certainly be doing so.
We will take the £350 options money and it will set aside for their benefit : send home : take home at the end of it. We are prepared to fully sponsor anyone allocated to us.

Controversial post. Which I think I know the answer to. But interested in others opinions.

Why are people willing to take in Ukrainian refugees. But not refugees from Afghanistan, Somalia, Syria etc etc etc?

Because this is the first time a scheme like this has been set up? But then why would someone question an act of kindness by asking why they hadn’t done it before?

As I see it, this is the gov trying to learn the lessons from Afghanistan, where the people taken in are still living in requisitioned hotels.

who has said that I would not be willing to welcome any refugee, show me the campaign that is looking for UK citizens to step up to that particular plate.
I am a compassionate individual who has been moved but what is happening, the appeal has gone out I am reacting to it.

Having said that, what has specifically motivated / moved me is that we are seeing woman and children and the elderly flee, the “men” are staying to fight.

In any case , I have no idea of the nationality / religion / colour / race / creed of those fleeing from Ukraine and may if things pan out be allocated to us.
