O dear - a bad noise!

Right - took the car for a spin this weekend over to North Wales and on my way back today - was going about 85-90 and suddenly a loud booming noise was coming through the car - Took the car out of gear while still doing the same speed into neutral and let the revs go down and the noise continues - so I assume I can rule out engine and gearbox.

If I slow down, the noise continues until I actually come to a complete stop. Then set off again and the noise has completely gone - can do 75-80 no problem with no noise, but if I speed up to 90 for any long period of time the noise returns.

Any ideas guys? I was thinking maybe some sort of bearing, but seems odd that it would occur only when I've been running at that speed for a few minutes. I can speed up to 90 and slow down and thats fine, just if I continue at that speed.

Let me know your thoughts.

Need to know more re the actual Loud ( booming noise) is it mechanical/ wind noise plastic under trays vibrating etc, exhaust pipes/boxes vibrating on bumper outlets etc, possibly wheel bearing but then you should get that at low speeds aswell

Best you bring it up to my neck of the woods and i'll test drive it for you

Hard to explain - It sounds like it could be coming from the front of the car - unlikely to be wind noise by the soudns of it - maybe mechanical, no metal on metal. Easiest way to describe it is it sounds like a deep v8 noise - almost like a blow exhaust (but its obviously not that).

Where are you basd loz?

I'd look at a loose undertray part or inner arch as this may not return to position unit stop... but just a guess; worrying though!

Does sound like the wind is forcing something into a moving part, you should be able to smell it, have a good sniff round the wheel arches....oh, do it in private, you might get carted off if your seen!

But if it was wind related it would stop when I slow down. It doesn't until I come to a complete stand still then set off again and it's ok. Just slowing doesn't make it go away.

So its a rhythmical noise...or constant?

Rev related ( in all gears?) or just speed related?

Hi WillT, Sorry to hear of your problem.

I take it you have no warning lights?

So the noise only starts at extended high speed, but not during shorter periods? This does sound like something getting dis-lodged and fouling.

You say the noise remains until stationary, but does the noise change whilst slowing down, perhaps as whatever is being fouled slows its rotation?

3200 or4200?

If 3200, Aut or manual?
If 3200 you could have a bad corsslink making the driveline suddenly go droning from certain speeds.

WillT, do you do anything to make the noise start, plant your right foot, back off, touch the brakes, turn in????

WillT......sounds as if it could be 1 of 1/2 dozen things really.....as Loz says, need test driven by someone in the know or take her to your nearest indie etc.....

Are acoustic ears of any use for these sorts of things or how practical are they when car on move....?

If I stay at 70mph all is well - If I accelerate to 90 and back to 70 all is wel. If I hold at 90mph after a few minutes the noise starts an won't go away until I fully stop.

I know it sounds silly but are you sure you have not picked up something like a small tree branch or some foreign object???????

So we can assume that its not rev or engine related, so hence it must be wind force related, check your arch liner, undertrays etc.

If you can imagine it would take a certain wind force to move a certain object in to path of a moving part I think you will be half way there.

But why does it only start at 90.............then only quit when he stops ...sounds bizarre....sounds more drivetrain related......
