Noise from CambioCorsa

Occasionally I get a sound coming from the back of the car (4200 spyder) when I'm accelerating in first gear. It seems to be only if I'm pulling away at a reasonable (or unreasonable) speed, doesn't come when I pull away slowly.

The best way I can describe it is like chewbacca from Star Wars, but in a good mood - it's not harsh.

Only lasts a second. The clutch seems to be engaged as the car does accelerate, it doesn't seem to be slipping.

Any thoughts?

Might be scuttle shake as the body's twisting under the load stresses, all spyders are renowned for scuttle shake

Chris,
I have had that a couple of times on my 4200CC, I think it is clutch related, but I am not sure, it does not happen all the time and can be when moving off slowly too.

It is a bit like Chewbacca, so we had better watch out for the crop circles and lights in the sky, although they would have to be pretty quick to lock on to any of us lot????

So, if its the spigot bearing, is this something to worry about or something to look at next time I need a new clutch?

From what I can gather reading old posts on this, it's the bearing between the clutch input shaft and the casing, and chewbaccca's complaint seems to be a sign that the bearing housing is slipping inside the casing or the shaft is slipping inside the bearing, but its unlikely to be a cause for major concern on its own...am I good with that train of thought, or am I deluding myself that all is well?

Thanks for all the help so far! This is a cool bunch of people with a very cool shared interest.

Chris, As far as I know it's a thing that you look at when changing the clutch, they don't cost much so it's an easy add on and normally last the life of a clutch. I will need a new clutch in a few thousand miles, so I'll have mine checked then and replaced if found wanting. As it still works I would leave it, unless the clutch is new, in which case who changed the clutch and left a suspect part in situ??

Many thanks, Robert. Good to have you guys around - I probably wouldn't have bought an 8 year old Maser without the support I'd seen lurking on this forum.
