You can go far too far :) I've still got to do my wheels, but I have done the important stuff :)

IMO he won't sell that for that price on Ebay, take the risk mate. You will get a cheaper car imo.

If it the model, mileage, year & colour scheme you want then I would still go for it. The £2,500 includes the ac compressor which may not need to be done for a number of years so if you take that out of the equation, it doesn't look so bad.
It's down to how long you have been looking, how many of your boxes this car ticks and what your gut feeling is

I agree but I don't want to seem unreasonable and wanted to be fair. I am a man of my word and didn't want to feel I was trying it on or reneging on a deal. Some of these things were known and some weren't so were new added things to think about. My price of £17k was based on a few of these things not being known or in the equation.

It has been hard extracting what info I needed to find out on this one. Certainly there wasn't a flood of forthcoming information. In contrast the 4200/GS I took on and have been negotiating through the sale I have been really open, honest, transparent and forthcoming warts and all.

Seems weird cracked tyres is not an advisory on an MOT as tyre safety and integrity must be impacted with cracks than without.

I agree there are more cars out there but it does take time to find them and it gets a bit boring sifting through the dross to find decent stuff. Every car has a story and I wouldn't buy a QP privately unless it was from a forum member or from a know good recommended seller. I am sure there are/will be more out there and maybe a better deal will come along. However this one fits the bill pretty much aside from a couple of issues/concessions. I'll have a ponder.

I could do with some 2p's worth from anyone who fancies chipping in on this one ;)

I did a deal on the QP from Superior Cars although it has taken a few weeks to get to this point for various reasons. I agreed a price of £17k with Steve when it was up for £17995 subject to a specialist inspection from Migliore and paid a £500 refundable deposit if the car wasn't as described.

Vic @ Migliore kindly went to inspect the car for me today. I have also found out that a previous buyer who pulled out of a previous sale in September had the car inspected by Migliore when they had the car in recently to have the variators done. The deal fell through so it went back on the market for £19k. Initially the car was up for £21k in the summer I believe then £18k before the variators then £19k after. Vic said the car is decent enough and has a few little cosmetic bits but for a 9 year old car with 57k miles is as you would expect. I am fine with this.

However he specifically mentioned that front tyres were cracked which was a bit strange. The brakes are not in great shape and although they are fine for the moment will need replacing soon but not immediately. Lastly the air con compressor was worn/noisy and is likely to be on its way out. It may last 1 week, 1 month, 1 year, 5 years who knows but it was showing signs of wear and failure is likely at some point.

I went back to Steve and said I was fine with the tyres/brakes as I can replace those as consumables over time. Although on reflection I'm not sure I'm happy with cracked tyres now. It is/was well overdue its 2 year service which should have been done in Jan 2016 latest really and the air con compressor was an issue. Vic told me it is £600 for the a/c part and maybe £200 to fit. The oil/filter was changed when the variators was done so maybe £500 to do the balance of the service to get that up to date. Therefore I thought that is £1300 that needs spending so I offered to split that 50/50 with Steve so sale price at £16350.

Steve came back and didn't see it the same way and said thanks for the offer but no thanks. He will/has reduce the price on Ebay to £16995 until the end of the listing and see what he gets. If he sells it for more then fine if he doesn't he will let me have it for £16350 when the listing ends if unsold.

Now I don't want to renege on a deal and I don't want to seem unreasonable. However the inspection has thrown a curveball. Should I not worry about these things and continue with the deal at £17k? Should I walk away? Or should a fair point be somewhere in between?

The service now added to the listing on 01.09.16 @ 57,000 miles by a maserati specialist is not totally accurate as that was an oil/filter change only when the variators were done. Nothing else was done.

A penny for your thoughts??

Im just catching up with this now, if your after my opinion, walk.

Dont go back and offer more, never do that and as he has told a few lies in his ad it doesnt bode well with the honesty of this man....its a fair offer seeing as its now been reduced again so good luck to him....who will look at a £16,995 car and not offer £16,500?? Hes doing all this for £150? **** him
The time it takes to come out and meet people is not worth £150

Dean. Go with your gut feeling.

By the looks of your posts, that feeling is to walk away.
I can see why you'd want to stick it out, but there are a number of QP's out there and the right one will come along.

Everyone on this forum has a story about a car they wanted but walked away from and there are many who have bought a car they should have walked away from.

If it stacks up financially buy it. If it doesn't walk.

When buyers go back and offer more after they have said "best and final" to me i loose respect and interest in them as they are playing games.....likewise with greedy vendors, properties sit there on our books for months and they get 10k less than the asking price from good buyers and they play hard ball and loose them and sits around for another few months whilst calling me up to go back to the original buyers who offered and tell them they will now accept which by then they have found something else

Never change the figure in your head and hes a greedy vendor.....he will sell it to you for that price you will see......

Agreed, there are lots out there, something about this one just doesn't sit right or grab me. Hold out for a car with better history or a forum members motor.

Yup, agreed Dem/Mark. it is easier to walk away but not sure if that is because it is naturally the easier/lazy option. I don't think Steve is such a bad bloke. He has been fine with me on the whole. Just that everybody is different to work with. Some are harder and different to others. It hasn't been particularly easy to extract accurate or concise information but it is what it is.

I don't need the car but always wanted a QP. I like the car enough to buy it. Just doesn't smack me between the eyes as the right deal with the inspection findings and looking at the whole pictures.

Your posts seem to suggest you want to buy it, but just don't want to feel ripped off.
- Maybe you just need to do a deal at a point where you feel you get some sort of contribution to future costs, and Steve gets pretty much what he thought he was getting. £16,800?
- Or could you do a deal with a retention of a few £100 against some of these specific things going wrong. £16,400 now and the other £600 if the aircon, brakes and tires last another 6 months?
Also, a good trick is to flip a coin - heads buy, tails don't buy (at £17,000 or maybe £16,800) and then see if you are disappointed with the result. Works surprisingly well.

Sounds like a plan as good as any! Maybe we should start making each decision in life this way and carry a coin at all times for this purpose ;)

If it's the right age, mileage, colour, spec etc for you, why worry about a few hundred quid? The A/C could be fine for ages yet, and it's just had the variators done and a basic annual service (which is only really an oil/filter change and good check over anyway). I would have thought that you two grown men could talk your way to the middle ground and make a deal if you both wanted to.

Yes there are, and will be, other QP's available. But finding one that ticks all the boxes is not easy, as they are so individual. So if this is the one for you, don't let a relatively modest amount of money get in the way.

As for cracked tyres, the day before yesterday I discovered the tyres on my SL were 18 years old!!!!
