New speeding penalties as of today..

This is actually now creating a dangerous situation on the roads I think.
I came back from Bluewater today after a lunch meeting and coming down the M2 a police car was driving on the inside lane doing 70mph and it was hilarious as it was like a rolling blockade as nothing in the other 2 lanes could overtake, everyone was just sat rolling at the same speed until he turned off. I can see frustration levels of drivers boiling up, whereby you would normally creep by at 75ish and pull back in, today it just looked as if the officer was doing it for a joke.

It is an unwritten agreement that, as speedos are only accurate within 10% (by law) ACPO recognise an 'allowance' of 10% +2. Therefore 35+ in a 30 up to 79 on a dual carriageway or motorway. The 10% leeway also covers the allowance for inaccuracies in the speed measuring equipment used to persecute motorists.

Yep not surprised at all. Exactly what I envisaged would happen.

Yes but it's also acknowledged that most if not all speedo's are designed to over read by about 10%. All cars I've ever had at 60 indicated on the speed are showing 56-57mph on the GPS device.

Not quite the case:

The UK law is based on the EU standard, with some minor changes. A speedo must never show less than the actual speed, and must never show more than 110% of actual speed + 6.25mph.

So 10% over is fine. 1% under is not.

In practice no one is going to be prosecuted for 31 in a 30.
I remember a couple of years ago this came up and I spoke to a criminal lawyer and his opinion was no one would be prosecuted as a defence of De minimis would be accepted.
There doesn't seem to be any suggestion that the "leeway" allowed just now is going to be changed simply clarifying penalties that will apply in event of a prosecution.
I know people that have had an SP30 for 34 in a 30 though which of course is well over but surely 50% of the population are doing this so you need to catch them all and give them the same fine.

To catch some not others & issue fines based on income is wrong and not fair & bordering discrimination.

I'm OK as I earn a pittance anyway! Still makes you think I would be better off on the dole & not working then let the state pay for me to actually have a life instead of working most of it.

I'm just wondering what happens when everyone does 30,40,50,60 & 70 as per the limits and there is no revenue generated,
Oh, and everyone stops drinking, all the pubs shut and everyone stops smoking,

Maybe then they will come up with "TAX" and cant hide it stealthily,,,

Deciding which drivers to nick with this new system is hardly random. Now it's based on income which do you think they'll choose to pursue, a clapped out Ford KA at 60mph in a 50, or a new Mercedes S class doing 58mph in a 50? You don't need many brain cells to work out which driver has the higher salary and will net the bigger fine. Total b0llocks.

Doesn't apply in Scotland. Next road trip is the NC500, forget mainland Europe!!

I don't think it looks too bad however it is virtually unenforceable because the government has no idea what a fair calculation of each person's weekly wage would be. It is not as simple as pulling PAYE records given the multitude of ways that people are paid. Maybe one day, when they (God help us) work out how to use computers, but not today. Imagine the number of appealed fines on the basis of poverty etc etc. The courts would not be able to handle it and bang goes any extra coffers to the Treasury. It's a deterrent and with dwindling police forces too, not going to make much difference to our daily lives.

Now that is an interesting thought! That would f×ck them up wouldn't it.

How about they squeeze every last ounce of creativity, desire, enterprise, energy, intellect and anything else that made our Britain great and can do so again. It has started and it is starting to eb away for me.

Surely that can't be a good thing or regarded as progress.

The 20mph limit being rolled out covering all Edinburgh will though. Frustration levels are growing - mostly with taxi & delivery drivers. Are they bringing in 20mph across Glasgow too?

Another interesting concept I have just seen discussed on another forum is to remove the financial penalty altogether and focus on non-financial penalties. We can then be happy in the knowledge that our government have't done this for money as a stealth tax.

I was not aware of any massive increase in road deaths or safety issues due to speeding over the last few years. Is there a problem and road deaths have increased significantly or disproportionately to the population increase or drivers/cars on the road?

Stealth Tax! Plain and simple.

However anyone doing 51mph or more in a 30 should have the book thrown at them IMO, 30's are normally there for a reason.

What I do have an issue with, is 'countryside 50mph zones' that are clearly good enough for 60mph but for some idiot in a council thinks that lowering a speed limit will stop people from speeding, but only makes Honda Jazzs and Nissan Micras drive at 40mph! Rant over!

I am all for enforcing low limits in towns around risk areas etc, but I also believe the ring roads , motorways etc. should have the limit raised.

Yup I agree. Many limits need to be raised but also many need to be lowered.

There should always be 20 mph limits near schools & areas of high pedestrian foot flow.

In many of today's modern cars 70mph on a clear flowing motorway is too slow. When these cars can out handle, out break the highway code stats by some considerable margin & and are much safer because of it then this is not an issue to raise the limit to 80mph. It can only work of course if idiots move over & lane discipline improves ten fold though to allow safe distances to be kept. Distances in the outside lane are getting ridiculously small then you get an idiot pull into it making it even smaller. This is what needs fining & resolving as is far more dangerous than the speed itself & causes more accidents & pile ups than anything on Motorways. That and not adjusting speeds & driving to conditions. It is not rocket science & is pretty simple to see.

I am sure many of us drive to the roads & condition as I do. We know what is OK & what is not safe most of the time. We don't need to be told. However many do it seems.
