Stealth Tax! Plain and simple.

.

What I do have an issue with, is 'countryside 50mph zones' that are clearly good enough for 60mph!

Chesterfield to Manchester, 50 mph road very few safe places to overtake until you get to a long straight which is one of the few safe overtaking spots , I think you can guess where the camera van sits

Further to my last, Speed is easy to quantify and therefore easy to enforce using automatic methods. The real issue on our roads is people driving using mobile phones, without seatbelts, under the influence of drugs and/or drink and also middle lane hoggers. Thanks to shortsightedness, there's no visible deterrent to the non-speeders thanks to the lack of traffic police and they only catch the above if they are stopped for something rlse or following an accident by which time they've either killed of maimed some innocent party by their stupidity.

Second Rant over!

^^^ What Martin said. Especially the mobile phone / Facebook updates blahblahblah. Far more dangerous to be fecking about with your phone at 30 then paying total attention and being under control at any speed. In my humble, at least.

With the old system "allegedly" if you did not complete the statement of means and pleaded guilty they had to follow the guidelines for penalties and use a standard formula for the fines which may work to the advantage of some who earn more. At court they push you to fill it in but i don't believe you have to as long as you tell them you have funds to pay a fine.

My wifes advice which was in hindsight was sound is write the cheque and move on - avoid the beaks

To be honest it you are doing 50 in a 30 or 101 on the motorway you deserve the fine etc. But for me it's about the limits. Thy have revamped the fines but not the limits. The 70 mph on motorways was set when ...the 70's....cars have moved on considerably Since then in safety and technology etc...yet this has never been taken into account. Motor show should be 80 at least. As said before it's not speed that kills its the idiot behind the wheel.

No politician will propose this, especially with the potential environmental implications. The fact that the limit in France is 130 kmh doesn't seem to matter. Perhaps the motoring groups should use that angle. That its unpatriotic to have a lower limit than the French, Germans, and even the Portuguese!

There are also counter arguments that there are more vehicles on the roads these days and a lot of the time during the week its a struggle to maintain a steady 70.

The bottom line is that you'd have to be driving like a prat to be pulled over at 80 these days.

Which is why I'll vote for Benny as soon as he stands for election.

That's true, but speed cameras don't discriminate between driving like a prat at 50 and driving perfectly safely at 80. Motorway speed cameras are a bloody menace!

Don't get me on camera enforced limits on smart motorways that change from gantry to gantry. What happens if they change as you go past?

Yes, grrrr! etc. And the new HADECS 3 cameras can be set to any speed. It's those that are most annoying in case some pr!ck has set them to 71.
