Ferrari were caught cheating in 2019 and while the FIA dealt with it in their classic botched style of secrets and lies - Ferrari were banished to the back of the grid as a result of their foul play...

Was the detail of their crime ever published? I heard something about fuel and oil but whatever it was it took their pace away.

Friend of mine works for an IT hardware provider who are heavily into F1. They've developed a system through infra red monitoring and drones to accurately map the speed and location of the cars on track which will siginificantly improve timing and track limits. F1 themselves are keen to implement it but the FIA spend all their time putting obstacles in the way because there's nothing in it for them.

My mate has had a few meetings with both and reckons the FIA are an utter shambles and the new head is a chocolate fireguard only interested in promoting himself.

On a more positive note! Nice to see a bit of humility on the grid for a change....

“Got a note from Brad Pitt explaining what happened with our near miss on the Austin grid,” tweeted Brundle yesterday. “Unnecessary, but nice of him. Absolutely nobody is obliged to talk to me on the grid, but as I endeavour to make 10/12 minutes of live and unscripted sports TV I’m obliged to at least ask.”

So here we have it:

The FIA has handed Red Bull Racing a $7 million fine and an aerodynamic testing reduction after striking an agreement over its Formula 1 budget cap breach in 2021.

They have admitting to breaking the rules and having an advantage yet they still keep their point for the season. FIA once again coped out. And when breaking rules when did it become OK to strike a deal. If it was a finensurely it should have been for the amount they went over. What a joke.

Was always going to end in a deal it would have been too acrimonious otherwise and some very rich legal bods would have just got richer

The disputed overspend was $1.8m, which really is chicken feed. The FIA agreed that they had spent over $1m in tax they need not have included so really a tiny number that is still down to interpretation. As per the previous comments, accountancy is about interpretation. I think this is far less offside than Ferrari's recent engine cheating but as ever it is down to interpretation. There is very little black and white in F1 finances, scales and tape measures are much easier to work with!

So the $7.25m wasn’t right that was reported when this started. How can it go from 7.25 to 1.8. Feels like a bit of negotiation went on there as well.

It was never stated as $7.25M. It was stated that the definition of a "minor breach" of the cost cap was an overspend of up to 5%. So given the cost cap, that is the maximum amount that would be defined in that way. It's only today that the actual amount has been revealed.

As the Constructor's Champion, RBR already has the lowest amount of permitted testing time. There is a sliding scale, designed to advantge the back of the grid with more time to close the gap between the teams. So they now have even less time, which is a serious disadvantage.

The financial penalty is nonsense however, especially it's an actual fine and not a reduction in the cost cap for next season, which I think would have been more appropriate. However, the the FIA wouldn't have got their grubby hands on that money, it just wouldn't have been spent. And then how would they all get their bonuses and pay for their jets?

In the end, these teams have amazing talent solely employed to find and exploit loopholes in the regulations. They are all at it in one way or another.

The FIA are the ones here that are damaging themselves. The teams are doing what it takes to win and compete. The upholding of the appeal by Alpine today is yet another example. They don't know what they are doing, they are not consistently applying their own rules and they are ruining the (outward facing) integrity of the sport. Especially with new audiences who don't understand that bending the rules is how to win.

Good to see the name Doohan on timing sheets albeit in the 'wrong' sport.. his uncle was a bit of a racer himself...a bit like Mick Schumacher's famous uncle...;)
{Sarcasm}

I also note a Lawson too...what is this early 90's 500cc? (and De Vries!!)

People should stick to facts and not be bamboozled by the press that tries to blow up everything. The British press especially has been going on about this in a far too spectacular way. The only thing this serves is the coffers of said press. And the fans get more polarised. In the end it was about 400k, so the 7 Mln fine plus 10% less wind tunnel seems pretty harsh - you can’t say the FIA copped, it’s a pretty harsh penalty for the cost of 3 front wings over the cap. Red Bull now gets 63% wind tunnel time compared to the midfield, let’s see how that works out next year.
