Carbon fibre GT40s and illegal E-types aren’t loopholes. His Jag was so bad at Goodwood this year even Motorsport made a comment, “how shall we put this? – slightly evolved deviation from period spec”
aren't all the classics at Goodwood vastly better than anything from the time. Power, brakes, materials, tyres etc. Great racing but none of it truly representative of the era. I enjoy it every year but everyone is cheating (sorry, exploiting the loopholes and lack of scrutineering!)

When I see a modern day racer getting his knee down on a classic bike, clearly better tyres are responsible. It can't be just rider evolution.

Most historics are vastly better but still comply with the current rules set by the FIA. Both mine are. Goodwood is an outlier in that they allow stuff that wouldn’t necessarily pass elsewhere. But if his e-type hadnt broken this year I think there would have been some serious questions being asked hence the comment in Motorsport. Him punting his GT40 a few years ago and everyone getting punctures from the carbon fibre was a joke.

F1 has always been about pushing the boundaries of the rules. Problem currently is the rules and penalties are fluid depending on which team breaks them, and it’s so obvious the “sport” has been eradicated. Just cannot get excited about it any more.

I guess any sport or even business is about pushing the boundaries to win/maximise profits and regulations/laws/rules try to regulate this to avoid damage to competitors/customers/the state/the general public. There will always be loopholes as regulations/laws cannot be watertight and the advance of technology creates new opportunities as well. So to win you have to make use of this otherwise someone else will. What is moral/ethical/fair is unfortunately in the eye of the beholder.

Disagree, when it comes to money.
It’s in the eyes of the rule book.
Spend more than the limit- rules are broken

Mine was more of a general comment to the loopholes discussion. But if we go there, any severe penalty should only be given if the financial perpetration is material, as with accounting there is always a grey area. Those that say if one cent more was spent, they should be penalised heavily, just don’t understand the nature of accounting. You can’t compare it to a wing being 0.5mm out of spec, as it’s not the 0.5mm that counts but the effect of the 0.5mm.

We should get rid of accounting grey areas then……

No more shenanigans.
That's the equivalence of boiling the ocean. Accountancy is always creative, interpretive and debatable. Lots of rules and guidelines but all can be interpreted.

Great race yesterday, worth staying up for! The great drivers all performed and thanks to a rare botched pitstop by Red Bull and a couple of safety cars it was exciting to the end.

Well done to Vettel for a great and inspired drive despite a botched pitstop, to Alonso for keeping his flying car more or less from disintegrating into the wall and even scoring good points after, to Charles for coming back from 15th (with some help of the safety car) to Lewis for sticking in there after he was passed and to Max for a great drive altogether - great start, exciting overtaking and finally to Red Bull for keeping Checo in the race with a damaged wing and getting the WCC. Good timing in difficult circumstances.

Sad to hear about Dietrich Mateschitz’s death. Whatever you may think of him in some regards, he built up an impressive empire from nothing and along the way made the dreams of countless sporters and fans come true.

Agreed great race, how Alonso could continue to race after that wheelie and just missing what would have been substantial injuries the end of the armco.

Great drives by 4 world champions and Leclerc drove well through the pack, a few dubious moves with some of the youngsters but hopefully they will learn

Yes I was one of the classics. Almost felt sorry for Lewis, must be going soft.

Steady Lando as ever.

Fernando ended up with a 10 second stop/go penalty, which ended up being 30s added to his race for a dangerously flapping wing mirror.
Apparently Haas protested that (and Perez wing) after themselves falling foul 2 or 3 times with Kev Mag earlier in the season. Inexplicably Alonso was given a penalty and Perez wasnt..

Yes, IMO the FIA were a bit harsh on Magnussen and now we are seeing the consequences. But apparently Haas’ protest was 24 minutes too late so Alpine are appealing. The FIA finds it so difficult to admit any mistake which makes a lot of the rulings seem erratic. I don’t think it’s necessarily politics, it’s just incompetence and bad procedures.

Martin Brundle thinks Red Bull will get a hefty fine and less wind tunnel time next season. What a joke it that happens. FIA need to grow a pair and do the right thing.
