Dan, my mate who had the GTS and now has a Fezzer 430 Spyder and a Disco, has bought himself a Defender as his day/site car, loves it. If you get one with no windows in the back, its classed as a van so VAT qualifying, you can always add the glass at a later date but guess you might need the 5 seats with your young family.

Just been down to LR dealers and spoke to a young chap that was enthusiastic about my needs and wants.
Fair play to him, he said that first thing I needed to do was to drive one as they are very marmite. So I'll be having a go in a 90 and a 110 next week.

So far I'm thinking of not going to the likes of Twisted and paying a premium for a pre-blinged version, but blinging it myself instead - Re-map, RR alloys, side steps, towing hitch, Recaros from the SVX, blah....

If it's only for driving in the country on a daily basis why spend £40k, spend £20k and have something else as well to play with, more decisions...but what

Mine's a 90 - disregard comments about a 'farmer's vehicle' - those who say that just don't understand!

Hello Frank - it's a standard 90CSW that I've had since new [in 2005] and was top of the range then but no engine mods to the TD5 engine - all speed needs are dealt with elsewhere!

It seems that those that "get" the defender love it, I'm guessing those that don't have probably never driven one...?
Looking forward to my test drive next week even more now.

I hope the steering has changed from the old series 3. Steering one of those was like trying to plait fog. So much slop you had to 50p it around corners. Noisy, uncomfortable, slow, thirsty and a stretch to get up into. What is there not to like?

You took the words straight out of my mouth Benny...I had a 2 1/4 petrol 1976 series III...mine had big wheels on it (there when purchased)...so made the steering even heavier...
undoubtedly the slowest and thirstiest car I have ever owned...but really loved it.

Hmm.. Now I'm in the 110 over the 90 every time... THe only real failing of the 110 is the 1.5 mile turning circle otherwise it is far more accomplished on and off road than the 90. I had three years of both on the old tank testing tracks and undeveloped land of the old Woolwich Arsenal to play with them and learn their faillings. Drove both extensively on the road as well... Agree with the 50p cornering technique...

Defender is the ultimate DFM vehicle, park it where you want to, dont wash it and own the road; as my Mrs says "because you can!" (most notably upon parking next to the entrance at Chedder Gorge where the car park ended at about 45 degrees & saving a half mile treck).

Not quick but if you want quick you by an Overfinch RR!!!

Open mind Dan....make it up when you've done the research...but looks like a little thought of, but excellent alternative.
