I am not one to brag but tonight I have done something very stupid and will no doubt cost me a small fortune. I am of course guilty as charged - my crime, excess speed on a motorway.
It was after 10pm so fairly quiet, the road was dry it's no excuse but after a mile or so the blue lights came on next thing I am sitting in an unmarked police car watching a video of me travelling at 110mph.
Despite being apologetic, giving a lame excuse and saying sorry, Surreys finest was having none of it. So I am left to wait 4-6weeks for a summons.
My only small consolation is after he had let me go 5 miles later I passed an AMG Merc pulled over by the same copper!
So punishment - minimum 3 points, hefty fine ( several hundred I imagine) and a 3 month ban is looking likely.
I wait with baited breath

Sorry to hear that news mate, there for grace of and all that. I think you might be heading for 6 points at over a ton I'm sorry to say, depends on the Court, the fine will be at least several hundered. You could try saying it was the first time you had taken it out after the winter and you had not had the car long. You totally misread the speedo and thought you were doing 80mph, the roads were quite, you had no idea you were doing that speed, your honour!! Or you can just say, well the car is built for far more than that, so I thought I was being quite reasonable, your honour and nowhere near the actual top speed of the car.
No joking mate, really sorry.

Oops, hope you manage to wangle your way out of it. Annoying getting caught at that speed, 99mph is ok, if you're going to get banned and a big fine, you may as well get caught doing 150mph!

Nah you won't get banned. Just be very apologetic in court, 6 points and £400 fine is my estimate, that's what I got and I already had 4 points on my license.

10 years ago, 108mph on the M3 at 10 pm in the summer.

Generally speaking, and it does of course depend on the court hearing the case, anything over a ton will be looked at hard for a ban. If you are banned then you shouldn't get points and the fine depends on the beak as well. I got done for 115 on a deserted A road miles from anywhere at 1 in the morning. I went to court and got a 28 day ban, £200 fine but no points. Good luck, from this point anything could happen!

These things happen esp when the tempatation of an open dry deserted road appears.......................be profuse in your apologises ....is it possible to pay a bigger fine and get off the ban?

Obviously you will be requesting copies of the DAILY compliance and callibration certificate checks had been carried out to the camera on that DAY , these are so very often not carried out and completely negate any charges if they can not be produced ,

good luck

That's very true Loz and a really good point. If the calibration checks have not been done, you could be home free, but I have known the records to be altered to suit the fuzz and you have no way of checking that. Make sure the Police Officer that operated the equipment is actually qualified to use the specific equipment he was using, a lot of time they are not, they forget to get their certificates updated and that means they are not qualified to use that equipment against anyone.

thats the important bit aswell , they must be certificated to callibrate the equipment before the day starts , aswell as being able to use it correctly

Good advice, but be careful how you ask for it. If they're going to prosecute you anyway, they will add some extra 'punishment' for good measure for being a smartass and trying to get off on a technicality.

its an automatic ban aint it?? i thought anything over 100mph is.......

Originally your right Dem it was intended that way as a deterrent, but with ever increasing unemployment and that the law was drafted quite a few years ago when cars were less capable and breaking systems not as good as they are now , have made magistrates apply a little bit of discretion and leniency where appropiate , so where as it used to be a rule of thumb , many now escape with high fine and points

Ouch, sorry to hear this RSM. Too easily done with these motors and there by the grace of God go all of us. I hope you get a favourable judgement.

Totally agree MAF. I would only pursue this route through a solicitor.

I would persue every route as my job relies on driving....

That's a legitimate defence Dem. Used it some years ago when I went above 12 points (pre-Maser days in a 145 Cloverleaf doing 90 something up the M1) Hefty fine, but no ban.

Complete cr4p im afraid Dem. The limit is the law but the black rat that stops you can exercise discretion for any speed.
