my 2002 4200 GT is for sale

Dear All,

After 2 years of very happy ownership I've decided to upgrade from my 2002 (52) 4200 GT to either a newer 4200 or a Gransport if my budget allows.

I bought the car from a reputable indy in July 2009. This has been the most reliable car I've ever owned, having needed just a new clutch (it was due and should be fine for another 30,000 miles), a new battery and one ignition coil in the last 2 years.

The spec is as follows:

Grigio Nuvolari metallic, Avorio seats, Nero dashboard, Nero door panels, Grigio Medio piping, Grigio Fumo carpets, 18" Multispoke alloy wheels, Alluminio callipers, GPS Navigation system, Climate controlled air-conditioning, Electric front seats + driver memory, Front seats with heating system, Electric folding mirrors, Driver, passenger & side airbags, Skyhook active suspension system, Anti-lock brakes (ABS), Electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), Anti-slip regulation (ASR), GSM phone kit, Maserati alarm system, Maserati toolkit, Maserati Grigio Fumo carpet mats

I also had a Larini back box and sports centre section fitted last year. In my opinion it gives the sound the Ferrari engine was always supposed to make and yet is not intrusive at motorway speeds.

I bought the car with 18,500 miles on the clock, the mileage is now 41,000 and will be serviced at my local Maserati dealer before sale, meaning no servicing will be required for 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. The car has a complete Maserati service history. The MOT expires in July but it should sail through.

The Pirelli P-zeros are in an excellent condition, the fronts have at least 2 years left in them and the back ones are almost new.

I also had the wheels full refurbished and painted black. As you'll see from the pictures they really do the car proud. The body has been swissvaxed and both the exterior and interior have been maintained by one of the best detailers in Europe. The same detailer refurbished the grill with high grade steel mesh.

There are only the smallest of stone chips at the front of the car and some tiny scratches here and there. Otherwise the bodywork is sparkling and rust-free. The interior is almost as new, apart from a small scuff on the driver's seat, where it's rubbed from the driver getting in and out. This is truly an exceptional car, very few are in this good condition.

The only issue is that the car is currently in Budapest and I'm not planning to bring the car back to the UK till early August. I am happy to arrange viewings when the car is back in the UK. In the meantime I can supply a huge number of photos and scans of the log book. Of course if anyone who wishes to come over for an inspection they can do so . They could even buy the car here and drive it back...

I'm asking £14,000 o.n.o. as I'm in a hurry to sell.

Cheers,

Stu

Thanks a lot, Andy. I really will sell this time. I'm curious to know if the Gransport "sound" is similar to the 4200 with a Larini exhaust. I'm embarassed to say I've never heard one live.

Good advice duly noted. Maybe we should patent some kind of wipe-clean plastic keyboard cover for Maserati lovers and other fans of hard-core ****?

Stu, IMO, the sound is similar but not the same. The Larinis are more vocal and have more 'guts' through the rev range. Might be an idea to refit your 4200 with standard pipes and put your Larinis on your (possible) GS. The only advantage of the GS system is the valves which give you a 'whisper' function (according to Spyker). Personally, I'd go for a GS with Larinis or other straight through tail pipe.

Thanks a lot, Benny. I had the feeling that if I go for a GS then there'd be no further need for the Larinis. Sadly I don't have my standard exhaust as I don't have anywhere to store them. I actually gave the standard exhaust parts to a forum member last year. I assume the GS exhaust parts could be swapped onto my 4200 if I were trading in?

I don't think so. Although they might fit physically the GS boxes are valved and the 4200 has no (standard) way of opening them so they would always be in quiet mode. Matt and/or Loz would be the people to ask as they have/ have had GSs with Larinis.

ah yes. The GS back boxes have swichable valves, which of course the 4200 would not be able to activate. I'll wait to see if Matt or Loz have any suggestions for someone potentially moving from Larini 4200 to GS in terms of what difference in sound to expect and what can be done to maximise the audible presence of a GS.

Two things you can do with the GS boxes , either have the valves permanently open , or its quite easy to fit the required solenoid and have it switched manually inside the on the dash simples

Thanks, Loz. I don't know how the sale will pan out just yet. I could be selling my GT privately, in which case it has to come with the exhaust I have. If I trade in against a GS then the dealer may not be willing to mess around with swapping exhausts.

I'm guessing though that I would not be disappointed with the sound of the GS in stock form.

A white rear plate Stu? The scuffers will have you for that! The car looks nice though. Good luck.

Stu, you could always do some sort of manual override? Not ideal but easy to do, you could hold the valves open with some sort of pin.

If it were me, I would contact ES or David Askew and rob the solenoid system off a GS, its easy to plum in. The hardest bit is wiring it to your SPORT button. I had mine wired to a separate toggle switch under the steering column.

Good luck with the sale Stu. Nuvolari looks the business! How do you find the manual gearbox on your 4200? Andy

I love the manual box, Andy. 1st-2nd is a little challenging when the engine's cold but otherwise I do love that analogue, organic feel of changing gears the old-fashioned way.

Thanks, Matt. To be honest I'll probably stay with the GS in original trim and trade in my 4200 with its Larinis.

In Hungary the police have no clue what's legal and what's not. In fact they know these plates better so it'd never occur to them that something's not right with the car. I have European frames for the reg plates so I just pop them out and swap them for legal UK plates whenever I'm back in Blighty.
