Looking for a new car

Hi all,

Just in the process of selling my TVR Tuscan and am looking for a replacement. I've got a Merc estate for running around in, a 1974 Kawasaki H1 for being a hooligan and a 60's Cooper S for racing.

I bought the Tuscan after selling an Alpina convertible that I had for many years and just never quite got on with the TVR. Looking at the usual suspects, Porsche, Aston, Mercedes SL, etc.

I've always liked Maseratis since the Ghibli ii, although I think one of that age is too much of a liability.

Choices on the Maserati front are:

3200 - after just having an £8.5k engine rebuild on the TVR do I want the risk of thrust bearings? Or are the horror stories now just that? Do think they're the best looking
4200 - not sure about the CC box. Whats the CC clutch cost I've been told £2600 but that seems a lot to me?
Spyder - I do like a convertible
GS - worth the premium?
GT - having sat in one I think they're just too big

Thanks Tim

Welcome Tim
New to Maseratis myself having owned mine since March, it's a 4200 Spyder and I love it, few little electrical glitches but other than that it's been reliable,I've clocked about 3000 miles in it so far.
Notice you mention a 74 500 H1, I had the less powerful 75 250 S1 which had the drum brake.

Hi there, if you think a 4200CC is or maybe the way to go then you might want to consider mine. Fully sorted, clutch at 24% according to last service (June at Autoshield - 300 mile's ago) 36k absolutely 100%. Comes with Scuderia electronic F1 pump relays fitted. Wheels just new powder coated, brakes all sorted and will be MOT around 3 September when I get back to UK. Will have around 2 months warranty left on it.
I am now working more or less permanently abroad and seems wasteful to leave it garaged. It won't be cheap but it will be good. ! PM for more details if interested.
I am only in UK between 1st and 14th September so that's the only viewing period I'm afraid.
Ps. Neismann Flair motorhome and a BMW i3 also up for grabs!

GT's are truly a thing of beauty. Yes they are large, but the don't feel it on the road.

Anyway, welcome!

The Granturismo is not that big once you get into it. Mines a daily in and around town, and apart from being selective about parking, I find it perfectly useable as a daily. In fact I love the constant looks of admiration..... and mines a MC-Shift 4.7.
However, if you want something more nimble and less 'heavy' and 'obvious' then the 4200 is the one. The GS is great but you'll pay a premium over a later 4200 for not much more stuff -in my opinion having owned/driven both. I've also owned a v nice 3200, always felt something was going to go wrong though due to it's age - but nothing actually ever did!

Welcome. I bought my Assetto Corsa 3200 after selling my Tuscan. I kept her almost 6 years :)
The endfloat issue is a possibility, but like Cerberas snapping cranks and chocolate finger followers on the speed six. Saying that I would definitely have another manual 3200 if funds permitted.

If you buy either a 3200 or 4200, there is the option of a manual box....
The 3200 is a design classic imo. Only slightly less so, the 4200.... ;)

Thanks all

Nibby the disc on the H1 is woeful, the twin leading shoe drums were the height of technology and work really well. I’ve had to change the standard caliper was just dangerous.

RobinL until the TVR has gone I’m not really in a position to buy something but may be in touch later.

Moz and Catman I’ve got an e-class estate so am used to big cars but a 3200/4200 just seem a more comfortable size, I will try a GT though.

I’ve seen Richard Grace have a very nice looking 4200 and 3200 so may get in touch for a nosey.

The 3200 is lovely. But lots of engine parts are no longer available. So if you do run in to trouble, it could be serious.
The 4200 is the current bargain. Especially if you can wangle a low mileage facelift version for mid/late teens. Don't worry about the clutch - it can easily do 40k miles, which might welll be a decade of ownership or more.
A 4200 Spyder. Nice enough on a sunny day. But go late model as the early ones were very wobbly. For example, I'd take a 30k mile 2004 over a 10k mile 2002. Ideally find a low mileage facelift version.
The GS. Now we're talking. Easily worth the extra - especially when the extra is actually only a few grand. It's perfectly possible to get a good GS for low twenties. Or a really good one for towards £30k. And what a cracking buy that is.
GT. A big but loveable bear. With a real growl if you go for the 4.7 MC Shift version, for which £31k is bottom budget.
But you can get the same engine in the last version of the QP GTS, for maybe £10k less. The best sounding Q car ever.
Conclusion. If you want an occasional car that is sporty, rare, special, fun to drive and possibly financially wise, a GS it should be.

Hi and welcome to the forum....

GS is worth the premium and you will pretty much not lose any money when you decide to sell.....GT is big but and in 4.2 form a GS would show it a clean pair of heals. 4.7 is the way to go if you are looking at a GT I would say.

I'll 2nd Ewan though and a QP GTS would be my choice.

No problem on timing. I forgot to mention my 4200 is a 2004. In Red with red stitched black interior
I'm only available in September for viewing or test drive. But if interested a sale at a later date isn't a problem.

I'm in Llandudno N Wales just in case.

Thanks Robin I’ll keep it in mind, I do like red.

I don't really want a QP, they may be a bargain but I'm just not after a 4 door as I've already got one.

Are you local to me Tim? The reason I ask is that a gentleman local to me is selling a Tuscan and after a 3200, 4200 or GS. You’re more than welcome to come and have a look, no pressure. I have a 3200 & 4200 in as you’ve said and in a few days a couple of GS’s too. I know a chap who’ll buy your TVR for fair money if it’s a good example.

Great looking mini, and an incredibly shiny clean floor... there can’t be many garages where you can see your reflection in the floor...

I'm not selling my 4200 ever but might be interested in your Tuscan maybe. Feel free to send me over the details & I'll take a look.

I'm looking at Chimaera's at the mo & have an early 400 but looked at a Tuscan when I bought the 400 but the ones I looked at weren't right for me.

I bought a late 2007 facelift 4200 circa a 3 years ago & love it. Great vfw compared to a GS & pretty much the same. One is more GT & GS a bit harser sportier edge. Both are great.

Hi Dicky

The TVR is currently on sale or return with Shmoo, he’s got a couple of people coming to look so we’ll see. I’m not local to you, I live in Worcester, although just at the cafe by the Raven near Whitchurch writing this on the way to Chester.

Thanks Jon a friend of mine recommended the epoxy floor paint.

Rockits the TVR will be on Shmoo Automotive’s website soon.

Welcome, Oneball.

I bought my Vantage from Ed (he was selling it on behalf of one of his repeat TVR customers). He was a pleasure to deal with and clearly cares about selling good cars and delighting his customers. Good luck with the sale and getting into some kind of Maserati.

On which topic, I absolutely loved my GTS MC Shift, but rejoice in the smaller size of the Vantage. It's about the same size as a 4200 / GS, and brings quite a bit more day-to-day practicality as a result.

Red, with a red stitched black interior is the perfect combination in my very biased opinion!
