Bit of an update here. It all went down hill. Sleep got worse, carried on feeling like deep fried ****.

2 weeks ago I ordered a blackout blind for our bedroom. Took the effort to close the rest of the doors where light was getting in.

I'm not completely 'cured' but there has been a *significant* improvement, not just in the numbers my ring is reporting, but in the way I feel. How fast I fall asleep at night, and (perhaps more importantly) how fast I fall back to sleep if I've had to get up in the middle of the night.

More deep sleep as well.

Previously the light level in our room didn't bother me at all. Suddenly seems like this has a much bigger impact. May not be the answer for everyone but for £45 invested and 15 minutes to hang the blind, I'm very happy with the results so far.

@rockits mentioned Andrew Huberman. Good mention - the guy's a genius. My wife's a big fan. She sleeps atrociously, but rates his thinking highly. Well worth investigating.
I’ve been
Looking at some of his “fitness” studies and methods. Can’t say I’m getting fitter and stronger but I’m sleeping as I’m always fooked. Lol. Well, that’s not true. I also sleep “atrociously” have done for years. I was up on Sunday at 5, 2 coffees, out the door, speed walk 10 miles and sat down for breakfast at 8….

My stress levels go up and down with work pressures and have a massive impact on my sleep.
At the moment “sleep stories’ (google will help here) which have helped in the past are not working but thankfully
“simple” counting from 1-4 and back from 4-1 repeatedly helps distract my brain from the overwhelming responsibility that come with my job.

Keep counting guys……….

Try 4-square breathing, Sam. Well, I'd argue it's 4-cubed, but still. Breathe in 4 secs, hold 4 secs, out 4 secs, hold 4 secs, repeat. Good for your heart, plus it's an easy distraction from all the shite that likes to swirl through your brain while you're supposed to be asleep.

Another trick is to (mentally) go for a walk. Take a route you know well, and just walk through it in your mind. The sights, sounds, smells.

Don't have much issue sleeping other then the normal old man habit of having to get up in the night but Mrs Z does. We have a lot of low level light so that our boy can find his way to us if he wakes up but as he sleeps well and is much more stable on his feet might try removing any light sources from the bedroom for her (we already have night blinds)

Thanks Crud, the 4square tip sounds a bit like my 1-4 and back, enough to distract, not enough to have to think about doing it……….

What about using himalayan salt lamps - supposedly they have other theraputic benefits too
