Kia = NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We bought a new Kia Sedative people carrier (Y plate) it was singularly the worst vehicle we have ever owned (and I used to ride CZ motorcycles once!) we had it for 5 years only because amasingly they offered us a two year extension to the 3 year warranty for £280 (bit their hand off for that)... The thing did 87,000 miles at 12-17 mpg (diesel)... 5,800 Imp gallons @ 90p/l = £23,500 fuel

Cost new £19,800
Finance £10k three years add maybe £4,500
Insurance £ave £700 x 5 = £3,500
Tax £180 x 5 = £900
Tyres would last 8,000 miles on the front and about 12,000 on the back = 36 tyres in the lifetime @ £120 ea £4,320
Replaced front pads every 15,000 miles = 6 sets £100 each and two new sets of front disks £200 each = £1,000
Servicing average £400 x 10,000 intervals = £3,200

Sold for £2,000 yes had to give it away almost!

Costs: £61,000
Sold £2,000
= £59,000 / 87,000 = £68p/mile

It is cheaper by far to run a Maserati!

Now this is a list of what I can recall was repaired / replaced under the warranties, numbers besides are the times it was replaced or repaired as I remember it:

Entire near side front suspension 2
Entire off side front suspension
Rear shocks
Front bumper
Roof rails
Rear screen
Re-upholstered 2
Upholsery resewn 3
Cr@py plastic door cards
Tailgate struts
sliding door mechanisms (both sides) 6 including side door 1 that fell off on aproach to Dartford Tunnel with 2-year old in adjacent seat!
Bodyshop repairs for side doors falling off x 3
Electric window mechanisms x 3
Carpet
Imobiliser / aux module x 3 (controls almost everything)
ECU
Audio system
Wiper motor & arms
A/C unit
Near side drive shaft x 3
Gearbox rebuilt 1 replaced 1
Cylinder head replaced 2
Whole engine replaced 1 (following cam belt failure)
Starter motor
Fuel pump
Injectors (lost count)

It was a joke that they had a courtesy car on stand by for us & we must have put 25-28,000 miles on these during this time!

Kia, just don't go there... We wouldn't ever again!

I would very much doubt it. 95% of buyers would find the original paint finish acceptable because they don't know any different. The last 5%, like Andrew and myself, don't and take steps to rectify it. Until you have seen the difference at first hand you don't really know what can be achieved with the right materials and a bit of skill.

Surely if you are not happy with the paint on a new car the manufacturer should rectify it FOC?

But surely begs the question , if your not happy with the paint on a brand new car ...............why buy it .............. in Andrews case he did get a rather good deal , think it was an ex demo , but why did the dealership accept it , perhaps for that reason they got it cheaper from the manufacturer

Discount is discount Loz, not a price reduction because the item is substandard surely

No, BMW don't pay for it as from their POV, it's not faulty - indeed, look at any BMW and they are all like this (Merc's similar too but not as bad). I could have bought any M3 in the country and it would have been the same.

As Benny said, the majority of people wouldn't even notice it just as most people wouldn't / don't notice swirl marks (hence so many people use car washes or the local immigrants to get their car clean). It's just my standards are so high that I wasn't prepared to put up with it!

As to why I bought it....well, it would have been the same had I bought any BMW so it begs the question....why did I buy a BMW? Well, at least the other things work...the paint was just a minor irritation in comparison ;)

Hi Andrew

I was not having a pop at you or the M3, just can't understand why any quality control dept would pass such poor quality paint work. Yours (from the picture) looked very bad.
I'm sorry for you that BMW would not put it right.

I have purchase five new cars over the last 10 years from different manufacturers, all metalic in various colours and have never seen orange peel in factory paintwork.
I'm am also very OCD about my cars and if any were like it that would walk away until it was rectified. May be that's why my wife calls me a knightmare customer LOL!

I would get my balls busted by a customer if we failed to provide good quality products/services, so in my mind why should any other company be able to.

Peter, its common denominators; 90% wouldn't notice a problem so BMW are not going to change what they do. The 10% remaing probably 80% will get fed up and accept the dealers wimpy excuses and the remainder will action it themselves like Andrew.

Lift the bonnet on any BMW and you see (where its not plastic) a sea of matt paint with no clear coat over it and large areas that are only in primer/J@p-lac (swear filter!) I have thought for 15 years that this is not acceptable and it is a big factor as to why I have never been tempted by BMW's.

I commend Andrew for sorting this out himself as otherwise it would be bugging him for as long as he has the car...

Newton I agree with praise of Andrew for sorting it out. Such a shame he had the need .
