Energy crisis

“Other” is balancing sources like BESS as I understand it.

If you look at generation costs don’t forget to allow for transmission losses. A Kwh at a power station will be more like 0.55 to 0.6 at the wall socket.

I'd love to know what the 'Other ' in Other Energy.

What this data does tell us is that we need more wind, and solar, and Nuclear as our back up. Then we will be self sufficient, and not have to worry about imports, and wouldn't be at the mercy of European buying.

Not really rocket science is it?
Howevecr from April 2022 UK exports power which represents around 10% of its demand and mainly to France!

Also in 'other' is me and Ewan producing Solar Electricity that isn't immediately known but merely estimated by Sheffield University, the rest is pretty much known.

Over the last 5 months we have had solar, we have exported twice that we have had to import. So if you like we have generated enough to cover our import, and that say of the neighbour next door too. With next to nothing in transmission loss too.
Obviously this won't be the case over the darker winter months but more micro generation at source of usage has to make a significant difference.
With projected figures our total generation for the year should easily cover our total usage, if not unfortunately at the required time.

As I understand it, the other section is grid scale balancing sources, MW+ storage arrays, rather than supply side micro generation which is more at point of use. You have nailed the challenge facing the grid, it’s a variability between how much and when certain sources contribute, both micro generation, which reduces generation load and grid scale renewables which change depending on the position of clouds and how windy it is. This makes daily planning to keep voltage and frequency within bounds difficult.

Grid scale storage providers take part in a daily auction to meet a projected demand for the following day. Then they support further variation outside of their projected demand contract at higher rates, which is where they really make their money. As we go toward more micro generation and grid scale renewables, this uncertainty will increase, driving more demand for storage to support it.

I’ve been quoted a number this week of the total grid scale battery storage capacity installed in the UK which I am in the process of verifying so won’t quote it, but let’s just say it’s significant in relation to total demand.

So for those interested the new Volvo EX90 due for release in November, has a bidirectional battery charging system which will (in certain countries) enable you to use the remaining charge of the car to feed back into the home or grid. So in high tariff times you can use the car to provide power which (hopefully) you gained at a cheaper time.

You can then recharge the car over night at lower tariff and repeat the cycle again and again. This can be programmed into the cars app.

You will also be able to share your power with other volvo cars if they need a top up And your feeling generous and the other driver is cute.

Think the issue for me would the extra duty cycle on the battery.
However, will anyone actually own their car by then, rent it, so that's then irrelevant.

EV batteries are always charging and discharging with regen and acceleration. Plus the load of a house is far lower than that over pulling onto a motorway. Using it like this won’t have a meaningful impact on the 5,000 plus cycles it will work for.

Has the price of crude shot up again? Last week paid £172.9 for diesel at my local Tesco, today it is £189.9

I was told by Volvo Kendal that you will only be able to lease the EX90 and all new EV Volvos soon.

My mindset is still ni-cad, need to move on!

Diesel up by 18p/l in the past two weeks, having been on the road this has been very noticeable to me!
