Common cause of battery drain.

Went to Bill McGrath today and the guy did not think there was an excessive drain on the battery. He said the battery was weak and said it was not possible to test it unless it was fully charged. He suggested doing this and see how it goes.

My experience is that the Navtraks are battery killers. During my period of Maser ownership I continually suffered flat batteries, I would change them out for new ones and the same thing would happen ... then, with my last GranSport, I went to the effort of having the tracker taken out and, my goodness, it was like a *normal car* ... I could leave it sat idle for a month and it would start first time.

So I would disagree with Mr McGrath, unless he qualified his statement with "whilst the devices still run off their own battery".

FWIW, I think some (all?) Navtraks will beep when their batteries are getting low.

But what about a case like mine in which my 4200 is not Navtrack equipped though my battery drains when the info center is connected? When I disconnect that, there is no drain at all!!

If you pull number 17 fuse on a 3200 the battery drain goes to next to nothing, but unfortunately the car won't then work either, no engine immobilizer,no center locking, no alarm system...

Modern car electrical systems are designed to be used... not paraded out once a month when its sunny!

Dave in my case I have found that drain goes to nothing when I disconnect the dash board Info Center! As mentioned also I have tested a 2nd Info Center in case mine had a trouble and happens the same which to my eyes means it's not the devise the reason for the drain but something from the cable! What would you say?

After my final decision to not sell my "girl" I took all yesterday to find out with a gentle car electrician I trust what is causing 2 years I owe the car this drain!
And I am coming back here Very happy to say we found it!
It is because of this:
http://larinisystems.com/collection/maserati/4200/larini-valve-control--remote-exhaust-kit

What I don't know is why is it happening since we have followed fully the manual to connect it!

Should I talk to Noor? How would I investigate if the small valve control unit is in trouble from the day 1?

Another reason not to have a valved system! if you want an exhaust loud then have it loud all the time!!!!

I am so happy I found 100% what the strange story was behind my battery drain
Well anyone who is or will be using the Larini valve controller should NOT use the wireless remote option!!
That is causing the drain and when I changed it to the wired option today drain went to 0 :)

Good news that you have found the problem but I would definitely contact Larini to see what they have to say about it, I understand they carry a lifetime guarantee on their products so it will be interesting to hear their opinion on your issue

You are right
I will do that it's better also that they know to improve their product than keep them out of it..

I have an 02' spyder. My battery was drained; had it re-charged and re-installed. Since the install, my alarm system is now continuously activated. unfortunately, my key fob doesn't work for me to set/re-set, and I have tried using the key without resolution. Even with the car started and running, the alarm will not disable. I siren will activate for 15 seconds, then shuts off. But, the alarm remains activated.

Any easy solution is greatly appreciated.

SD or a working key is needed to disable the alarm.

Whats wrong with the key, button fallen off inside or flat battery?

If your button is broken you can use a paperclip of the like to short the connections (left to right) but you will need a working battery first. Red button as pictured below, one is for the boot, one or the door and alarm disablement (bottom one I believe). If you need a new button, PM me your address and Ill send you one FOC, I have a bag of them.

Thank you for responding...

I have installed two new CR 1220 batteries, and took it to my service guy to check if any signals being generated when the buttons are pressed. The remote indicator shows not signals transmitted when buttons are pressed. I am not clear on the paper clip resolution. Please explain to a 5 year old. Your photos is exactly how my piece looks.

Sure, the buttons fail on these keys and break away or fall off.

With a working battery, if you short the two terminals marked with blue dots, its the same as pressing the button.

You can do this with a piece of wire or a paperclip or such ferrous tool.

Do it near the car and see if you get the beep

I have an 2003 Coupe which I fitted with a new battery about 6 months ago because I thought it was getting a bit weak at 7 years old.

Last month, I noticed a the battery draining. I usually connected it to a CTEK if I wasn't going to drive the car for a couple of weeks, so I hadn't noticed the battery losing charge until I forgot to connect the CTEK one day after a long run. The battery was flat after a couple of days which I initially thought was probably a tracker problem as is often mooted on here. Coincidentally or not, I had quite a number of dash lights coming up on the dash, certainly enough to make your typical 3200 owner feel at home. I thought the lights were a symptom of a weak battery, but it turns out it was the ABS controller which was faulty and this was draining the battery as well as causing the Christmas tree effect on the dash.

The bad news is the 2003 Coupe part is obsolete. The good news is I found one and the battery drain and the lights are now fixed.

My old late spec 3200GT dosen't have a tracker fitted...Shiltech checked It all out,but it still runs the battery flat in two weeks if I don't use it or turn it off...
Suppose It's all these stand by system ECU's..mates brand new Jag XF battery was flat as a pancake at Heathrow after only five days away!

Dave
I have the same problem it takes about 3 weeks to go flat, so cant park it up any where for any length of time, unless you disconnect the battery, or leave it plugged into a battery conditioner
