Hi, Is it just the Granturismo engines that are affected? interestingly my Gransport's engine number is 148697.
My understanding is it is mainly 4.2 & 4.7 wet sumps gt or qp that are affected although a few dry sumps suffer too apparently. I could be wrong though so I defer to someone more in the know.

I would agree with that having worked for them.
With the Dry Sump engines I would be worrying more about the oil/waterpump unit especially as these engines are approaching 20 years old.
When I did mine in 2014 they were over £1500 before labour and other costs.
They had plenty of stock though.

Right, the garage is more than happy to take the car back for the work to be carried out for the variator rattle. While returning it, I feel I should point out some other things that may be normal but may be a fault. I feel that the knowledge I have seen on here I will ask first:

1) only occurred once but the mileage was flashing on the clocks. I started car again and in never happened and hasn’t happened since?

2) satnav and radio all turned off while driving and the white screen and Maserati logo came up for about 10 seconds then all turned back on again. Again, is has only happened once.

3) when engine is cold, I drive in auto (it’s an mc shift 4.7) not in sport mode, when I slow down, it automatically drops a gear but gives a double blip of the throttle? After about 2 mins of driving it’s fine. Wondering if this is ok or worth mentioning.

Don’t want to seem like a hypochondriac but would rather mention all my issues in one to get resolved.

thanks for all advice so far

Never heard of No1
No2 is a common issue that needs fixing, it’s the NIT unit failing
No3 is normal

The flashing mileage is also related to NIT issues. If a different version to the original has been fitted for example. @Contigo will know.

Had it flashing on my old GTS once and never came back. If it persists then it is related to probably the NIT I'd say.

I think I remember that garage in Bedford (CL) had this problem and I put them in touch with you. He told me they had the wrong version of the NIT?

Yep if you put a HW8 (GTS 4.7 Bluetooth capable one) in a 4.2 car then it will do this. The flashing mileage indicates that the car generally needs a Proxi alignment. I have a list of them all. If it flashes just once say in a year then ignore. If it is everytime you drive the car then it indicates a proxi alignment is needed.

There was a member on the ML forum who had an occasional cold-start rattle. They installed a pre-oiler system on a 4.2 wet sump car and never heard another noise from the engine. I think they spent around $1,000 dollars for all of the parts. I've also heard that if you drive like a little old lady all the time, that may lead to premature failure due to a lack of rpm's and subsequent oil flow....while this sounds plausible, I have no facts to back this up.
